Hi Again,

Can GBPVR automatically shift from one HD to another if the one its recording to runs out of space?

Thanks

Not automatically AFAIK

Haven't done this (i have every thing pointing to 2 250gb spanned drives):

Once your first drive is full you could change your Recordings Directory to the new hard disk and list both hard disks in Video Library Directories

I don't see why this wouldn't work...

Thanks for the reply.

What do you mean by spanned drives? I haven't heard that term before

What RAID type does one need for connecting several drives to make one big drive?

A spanned set of drives simply means you can set up multiple physical drives to appear as one volume in windows. For example, you can set up 2 physical drives and they will appear in windows as your c: drive. The space available on the c: drive will be the total of the 2 physical drives.

RAID is something different again. Spanned drives can be configured without RAID support.

You can only use RAID with windows XP Professional and not the home edition.

RAID 0 is stripping, which makes 1 big "drive" out of 2 drives
However you have zero security, if one drive crashes, the whole virtual drives goes kaboom, I think. If you want to go RAID, go RAID 4 or RAID 5 which allow for 1 drive to fail on an array of drives.
More info here: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/raid.../index.htm

Depends on the controller. If the array is managed by hardware, you can use the drive on any OS that has a driver for the controller... We had Raid 5 running on NT4 or Win2K in my previous job

Thanks for all this great info. Little by little I'm starting to make sense of it all Big Grin

How do you set up a "Spanned" drive? Is it done in the OS?

I was thinking of using a serious amount of space for the recording drives (as I record everything I watch - absolutely nothing in realtime). So for example - 2x 250GB would = 500GB with a spanned setup? Cool

I'v been thinking of setting up our DVD library on a RAID 5 (with parity), but I wasn't sure which one was used to make one big drive scenario (without backup - the word striping was used, which meant nothing to me) - Thanks LilY0da.
I doubt one would need backup on a recording drive.

Yes, see:

This is what I now have - but I still want more...
