Great Work, Fred! I bought a new TV, the Samsung UE40F8000 and installed your app. A few things I noticed that I haven't read in the thread:
- I cannot controle the TV's volume (it's working fine in other apps);
- The picture slide show seems to place the pictures over the background semi transparent, so the pictures aren't looking very good, I suppose this is something for sub;

Thanks for the feedback.

Hmm, I have no idea to why the volume is not controllable. I don't own a Samsung TV myself so I can't test it in reality. I'll take a look at it using the emulator when I get the time.

Chris

Yes sub will have to have a look at the slide show thing.

@sub, what about an “activty” to tell where you are when entering a plugin. In this case I would be able to alter the UI refresh rate from my usually 10 s to maybe 1 s and the blending effect would work to some extent.

The place that provides the remote UI doesn't really have knowledge of what plugin/screen is being displayed, so not straight forward to do that. That just sounds like a work around too, and I'm sure there are better ways to fix it properly.

Sheik, if you disable animation on the Settings->General screen, does it help with this slide show problem?

Yes, that solves it.

Okay, seems like disabling animation on web clients is one way to to.
I'm experimenting with adding an extra UI update ~1s after a keypress. It seems to work while still providing the poor man's version of animation.

Sorry, sort of off topic but do you know if there is any SDK for the new Vizio Internet Apps+ platform such that your app could be ported for 2014 Vizio TVs? I have searched but am unable to find any mention of developing custom apps. Thanks.

When I looked at Vizio players with html5 and app support I wasn't impressed with the codec support http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/16/vizio...am-player/ Roku and the Aple set the bar too low for those of us with HD mpeg2 needs.

It is a little maddening how most of the streaming boxes don't support MPEG-2 because how much could it really cost to add it. However, wouldn't the Vizio Smart TVs probably support MPEG-2 anyways in the DLNA app, for example, since they have ATSC tuners? I'm contemplating a TV for the bedroom and I would just get a Samsung if it weren't significantly more expensive and a little too big for my furniture.

Often the media player ARM chip logic is isolated from the ATSC playback, ATSC in TV is usually very high grade. There is no market for mpeg2, think Google with all their SageTV tech, but even then how many people actually capture ATSC for playback just with DLNA. I don't certainly know any colleagues or friends who do.

Back to fred250's app. It looks great on a $80 Samsung BD player you don't even need a smart tv.

I would think DLNA playback of MPEG-2 from DVD-sourced files would be pretty common. In any case, I would get a Samsung BD player except for a few of my movies that have Cinavia protection.
