setting up client is easy
just install on laptop same as you did for server
once installed
goto settings/devices at bottom click act as client>enter server name(or ip number) and database share (\\192.168.1.100\npvr) depends on server ip number and where your npvr .db3 is
also need to make sure you make db writable for the client

Q1 If you set up a recording does it grow into a file?
Haven't yet found the one file in the attached screen shot that doesn't say it's failed. It's certainly not in the default folder nor the one that I've created in the settings menu (see jpg's again)

stustunz Wrote:Q2 if it does can you play that file back on your tv through dlna (you mentioned in other post)?
Since the file isn't where the settings suggest it should be I can't pick it up from the TV via DLNA either :-(

stustunz Wrote:Q3 can the recording be played back in something like vlc (plays pretty much anything) ?
VLC does play a .ts file, but I believe that was created using the USB Tuners own software... PCTV Centre.

Okay will do. I'll report back later. Thanks for your time and help. :-)

[edit]Actually the Default folder doesn't actually exist, odd, I'd have thought that NPVR would have either used a pre-existing folder or created where it needed to?

Even odder, when you go to edit it it does point at a valid path - ...\Shared Documents\Shared Video\Live at the Apollo\Live at the Apollo_Date_Time.ts

Tried opening this file with VLC and whilst it opens the file and displays the first frame, it doesn't actually play it.

Test recording complete. Same issues as before. All logs attached. Once again VLC can open the file and jump forward, displaying a static frame each time, but cannot actually play the file.

[edit]Windows Media Player copes with audio sound track but not the video.

It sounds like you are wasting your time (and ours) testing play on the server. Why not just try the client which hopefully has a better card.

Have now installed NPVR on my laptop and changed all the media paths to point at the same locations on the server as the server installed version does. But it doesn't know about the recording I made with the server version.

So I guess there's something else I need to do to make my laptop a client of the server?

The client needs to be configured to point the server. Recordings are in the Recordings menu, the Video Library is personalized to the client and would need to be configured with shares etc.
