A Trash folder for deleted recordings

Makes sense I dont want to have to duplicate this code a dll would be ideal. Maybe add another method getRecycleBinPath so we can list it if a user wants to recover.

I figure the recycle bin plugin would allow restores and stuff

how about we just throw everything into windows "recycling bin", that way its handled by windows.

The problem is that you can't (as far as I'm aware) set windows to delete files after a certain time period. A custom system would also be able to preserve guide info for recovered recordings.

i only read a tiny part of the thread, so i guess i missed that part where that was a wish. however i suspect you can empty the recycling bin via code at any given interval. id be surprised if you couldnt, but i could also see why you couldnt (well of course you can, it might just be extremely tricky).

also the recycling bin with windows can only save a set percentage on each drive, so if you set it to hold 10% of your recordings drive it will automatically delete stuff (i presume the oldest stuff in the recycling bin) when it gets full.

That could prove to be a problem if you consider that these video files are rather large in size. The recycle bin would easily reach its ceiling of 10% at which point recordings would drop off like flies. I would think it's impossible for a plugin to determine if and when a file was deleted independently by the OS. Perhaps adding a setting that increases the size of the Recycle Bin would alleviate this a bit?

Well, I had a burst of energy and wrote a stand-alone app that hooks the kernel32.dll delete file functions. It checks to see if the file is being deleted from my recordings directory, and if so, returns a successful delete but actually moves the file to a nominated trash folder. The same app monitors that free disk space and deletes the oldest files from trash when free space drops below a preset limit.

Seems to work OK so far, but I haven’t tested it properly yet.

I think this is an excellent idea--however, would it be possible that when you "delete" it, it automatically compresses it to some format that will make it smaller (ratDVD??) and then "deletes" it

I could call a batch file after a file is moved to the trash, and you can do anything you want with it. I'm not very good with transcoding to DivX or alike, so perhaps someone else can suggest an automated process for this.
