Wishlist: Enhanced remote control features

To name a few Remote Control features I would find convenient:

1. Stop recording of Live TV - can manually start a recording with remote, but not stop it (or at least I haven't found it yet)

2. Switch to last/previous channel watched

3. Previously Recorded TV Menu, can do it with KB but not remote.

4. Toggle Full Screen/ Windowed display mode - could use the Radio button or some other rarely used button for this.

5. Remote control remapping feature (this may already exist, but not sure).

I would recommend a FLIRC http://www.flirc.tv

The device will will allow you to use any ir remote and fully customize it. It will do everything you want and plus some. I use it with a Hauppauge 45 key RC6 and an old Firefly mini

Any features which you can do with the keyboard, you can do with a remote. you just need to configure/programme your remote/IR software to send the appropriate key sequence to he NPVR app.
So example to switch an app from windowed to full screen move, you need to config your remote to send {ALT}{ENTER} to npvr and assign this to the button of your choice.
Obviously if npvr doesn't have the functionality you seek, Sub would have to add the feature to the app.

I am using a standard (Diamond RC6) MCE remote. I have already reviewed the keyboard reference and have based my wishlist based upon things that controls that don't appear to exist in NPVR's list. If you were to examine that list carefully, you would notice that there are no remote commands for those features that I have named.

Further, except for the full screen toggle, all "wished for" controls work fine with WMC (not needing a FLIRC or other additional gadget). There is no special software with the MCE remote. The MCE remote, as far as I understand, generates the equivalent KB keystrokes as would a KB. I am not sure about reprogramming anything in that the MCE remote controls work with WMC as is out-of-the-box.

I would like to eventually replace WMC with NPVR on all my TV's/HTPC's because of the very impressive capabilities of NPVR and uncertain future of WMC. But before that happens, I would like to have a remote control that is "wife & kid" proof! I am wishing for those features that already exist in just about every other remote control that I have ever used. I believe that this is a reasonable request and probably has a near universal applicability to anyone who would want to use a remote control to control and watch TV.

btw, there's some info on mapping keyboard commands to the MCE remote via the registry here. This may give you the ability to implement a couple of the features that you are seeking.

Unfortunately they decided to build the NextPVR wiki from scratch, here's good info on the GBPVR wiki (scroll a bit) http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Hardw...eyMappings Sounds like your MCE remote has fewer keys.

As for full screen that's kind of useless it seems to be more something you wouldn't want to do with the 10'ft interface, its pretty hard to move the remove focus to another app and you probably need a keyboard mouse then anyway.

If your Diamond remote is a "real" MCE remote, i.e., it uses the ehome driver system (you can confirm this in Device Manager), then you should be able to configure it pretty much as you wish. See this site, which is oriented to XBMC, but has the info you need:

With a real MCE remote, you can edit the registry to map the buttons to keystrokes. For example, I have the Blue button mapped to F7 to cycle through the aspect ratios. There is a small app to give you a gui editor for this, but the name escapes me. You can search the forums for posts by me; I've mentioned it a couple of times. Also, I think there is something in the wiki about MCE remote no software.

You can get a good real MCE remote on ebay for about $16 that has the 4 colored buttons which are handy. Search for seller dacheng2009.

Well, the remote appears to be "real", as it was advertised as such and it works perfectly with WMC/ehome and costs $8 shipped. Not sure how much more real it gets than that.

Yes, I could go through and make registry changes to every PC and make it work, but my original wish was to have NPVR provide a similar "User Friendly" feature set as does WMC. At my age, I lean towards lazy .

If you don't want to mess with the registry then install IR server suite or LM Remote keymap. Since you are only setting up NPVR then it should be done rather quickly. Using these remote control software you should be able to make your remote control do anything a keyboard can.

With all respect, I fear that each of the responders to my original post has missed my point. It is not that I can't modify a registry key, add an additional program or hardware gadget, but (thinking that is this subforum is for "wishlist" items), I have presented a wish that would make NPVR more user friendly for everyone, not just the avid hobbiest or astute techno-weenie.

If I were to recommend something to most of my friends, neighbors and family (most not technically savvy), I would want to present to them something that would be easy to use without much hassle or customization. Maybe NPVR wasn't meant to be such an animal at its birth, but it is so close now, that just a few more user enhancements would bring it ever closer to that goal. IMO, improved remote control features is one of those enhancements.

Not wishing to belabor this any further, I rest my diatribe.
