Just wondering ... Is there a way to pause recording as you're watching ... To clarify... When I was a kid recording movies from tv on a VCR. I would push pause during the commercials, then pause when the show came back on to resume recording. Can anything like this be done?

Instead we run Comskip during or after the recording to create skippoints so that when you play the recording npvr will automatically skip the commercials Smile

Yes I have read about Comskip. It's a really good idea. But doesn't help if I want to give the file that I record to someone else to watch. I think i read about another utility that can cut the video between the skip points that Comskip creates (that might help). Does Comskip work better than VideoRedo at detecting commercials? Does it function by detecting the fades and black screens between shows and ads? The only reason I ask is because the sports that I record don't have transitions or black screens in between... They just cut directly into the commercial in one frame.

Thanks a lot

Comskip have a number of detection tecniques and some tuning is often nessesary. Once you got the settings right you can run Comclean to remove commercials permanently. Most of my channels also cuts directly from show to commercial, and comskip functions better on some channels than others. The ID channel (Investigation Discovery) is flat out frame-on, while Viasat History is only moderate accurate. I guess I could have fine tuned it with different .ini files for different channels, but I'v setteled for something reasonably good for most channels.

I haven't really tested VideoRedo so I don't know if Comskip is better, you should download the free version and try it out. (you will need the donator version if your channels is H.264)

As far as I know videoredo is just based on balances during the transition that you set... I haven't had that good of luck with it... comskip sounds good i'll give it a look. Thanks!

I use Comskip in combination with VideoRedo (you can tell Comskip to make a VRD project file), which works pretty good. I haven't done much (if any) tuning, but the project file is usually pretty close, and I just modify the cuts after a quick check.
