For some years now I have been running GB and NextPVR and have loved how well it has worked. I have the main PC under the TV in my lounge and a Pi2 in the bedroom. All works very well. But I want to downsize by setup and want to do away with the full sized PC in the lounge. (Too big, too noisy).

I am looking at the NAS route for storage and having a much smaller PC as I want to run NextPVR on that box as in my view it still provides the best user experience. My issue is that I get some of my content from SAT and some from DTT and fitting capture cards into a small box may not be an option. I have purchased an HD Homerun dual DTT device and this works great, but I am struggling to find a similar product for sat. There are a few SAT > IP devices but will these be seen as capture cards by NextPVR?

My ideal setup is that I would run NextPVR on the main (new but smaller and quieter) box with my tuners all being network devices. The tuners and NAS would sit in my office / study area away from the lounge and have copper network connections.

Any pointers gratefully accepted!

If I were doing what you are planning, I'd get one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...-_-Product (or any of a number of similar products)

I've sold a few to clients for basic office machines, they are quite impressive and I think they should do just as well for NPVR. you just need to add a 4GB or 8GB SODIMM and an SSD. It has a slot for an m.sata SSD, as well as a standard 2.5" bay. I wouldn't want to rely solely on the NAS for recording, so I'd probably use a small m.sata SSD for windows, nextpvr and the livetv buffer, then a 1TB HD for recording.

Regarding SAT>IP, NPVR has support for that now, but I couldn't tell you anything about what devices are supported.

Yep thats kind of what I was thinking for the "PC". I love the features "Small and exquisite shape brings you the enjoyment of the beauty , whilst enabling you enjoy the life with speed and share worldwide splendidness, is the best choice of being placed at home or office" Smile I need some of that splendidness!

yeah I read that with a grin, gotta get me some of that worldwide splendidness. I think there was something pretty funny on the box too, but I don't recall what it was.

I started with a full size PC next to the TV as server and client with another desktop PC for the bedroom client. Later I got an HP Microserver which I put in a cupboard with the tuners as the server and got old Slimline PCs to go under the TVs in the lounge and bedroom. I later got a couple of very small Nettop low spec PCs as Windows clients but about 18 months ago switched to using X-NEWA on OpenElec for the clients.

I've been long thinking about cutting the cable chord though I do like having use of a cable card tuner. Still not sure what I'm going to do but my 'deal' with my cable company goes thru February 2015 so I have time.
But, with that in mind, I did just get a NAS a few months ago from Synology and love it. My KDlinks 720 box works great with it as does every computer in the network. I've not yet taken to saving recordings to the NAS but I do have a simple program to copy them from the PC to the NAS when complete. That'll change in the future.

As it does appear our cable company has plans in the future to make all QAM encrypted, I still have some thinking to do. WAF is a big deal but at some point when it's a matter of dollars and what's available as for as hardware, I'll just have to make the decision and live with it. In the meantime, I read as much as I can about what is out there now and what might be in the near future. It does appear to me that in 5 years or less, a great majority of us in the U.S. will be getting their TV content via the internet.

Does anyone have any experience with this or similar device (with NextPVR) http://www.inverto.tv/products/product.php?id=264&typ=2 Looks ideal as you can run cheap cat 5/6 straight to your network rather than more expensive coax - especially if you have a long run and don't need a CI (Freeview only for me)
