It all started with a recording which would not play!

Here is a ten minute manual recording. The recording was made with zero start and ending padding. An attempt to view this displays a blank screen with no video or audio. After a few moments NextPVR returns to the recording list.

Pressing skip (short or long) immediately after starting the playback does a skip and the video then plays normally. Playback using "resume" plays back normally. In conclusion, the recording process causes a glitch at the start of the file that causes media playback to barff. Everything is cool once we are past the start of the file. Playing the file in Windows Media Player has the same symptoms (as expected). And finally, Media Player Classic plays the file without any problem (also, as expected).

I'm getting an increasing number of recordings like this. I've gotten so used to them I now just automatically press skip as soon as the screen goes blank. It's worth noting also that skipping back too close to the beginning causes it to freeze up again.

I experience this with all my recordings. I have set up my Harmony remote with a button that will play the selected recording and then do a quick skip. After the first time playing, resuming the recording works fine. Not elegant, but it works.

Graham, it plays fine in mpc-hc which is what I consider the best Windows baseline player. But yes it looks like many players will have troubles with it.

Totally different from Graham's he has a bad table you have bad data so you need more than remux.

Last night I tried Mpeg2cut2 which easily enables you to cut out frames at the start but it has not helped. MPC-HC and VLC both play the cut files but a NextPVR Windows client and Kodi wont play it as a file.

Next will try remux with FFMPEG

I gave up trying to remux with FFMPEG! Although the processed files still worked in MPC-HC and VLC they didn't work in Windows NPVR client or Kodi. However after a good recording had been remuxed that no longer played in NextPVR client or Kodi!!

The Remux function in the trial version of TS-Doctor works! All the previously faulty files now play in the Windows client and more importantly for me in X-NEWA.

I've had only one night of recordings with this fix, but so far have had zero black-screen-starts. Until then I was having the problem more often than not.

I stand corrected on my statement that the samples didn't have the same problem. Both of them have a bad PAT in packet 1 pointing to PID 0. Hopefully that is the change. It would be trivial for me to write a utility to rewrite packet zero, if anyone wants it for existing recordings.
