Hello all,
I am very new to this and can't seem to get past step two of the "First Steps" (http://nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?n=Qu...FirstSteps). I have Mediacom cable TV (QAM signal), and I am required to use a DTA (signal decrypter). I have tried both TV tuners to scan for the all frequencys and I get nothing. Any ideas?

If you're using a set top box (DTA), then it's outputting an analog signal, not digital cable (QAM). See the sticky thread for info enabling analog support (ie, basically install the WinTV software).

So the DTA I have is analog? I know that they offer digital ones too.

These DTA devices all take digital input and output analog. They were basically created to allow people to continue to use the analog tuner in their tv when they switched off analog cable tv a few years ago.

Hello ymustuknow,

I'm also a Mediacom customer. At least in my area, the local and family cable channels have been Clear QAM for nearly 3 years, meaning you could connect the coaxial cable directly to a QAM tuner without using a DTA (however an analog TV would not be a suitable monitor). Difficulties would only arise if you subscribe to a premium package, because those channels are indeed encrypted, and you would have to capture analog STB output to use them in NextPVR.

All my TV's are HD, with my TV's directly connected to coax, I don't many of my channels. When I use the DTA, I get them all. I have tried connecting my PC TV tuner with and without the DTA and get nothing. I am not sure what you consider premium, but here's what I have for TV stations (picture).

Sorry, it sounds like Mediacom encrypts a lot more channels up in MN. I can get nearly all of your 2-digit channels without any DTA (wish I could get TCM though).

Did you try an all channels scan on the QAM device? How about an HRC scan on the QAM device? You should see tons of channels; whether they are all encrypted or not is another question... but when you say you "get nothing" that makes me think you either used the ATSC device or scanned the wrong channel range.

(to be clear, I'm talking about connecting the cable directly to the PC tuner, no DTA)

I have tried every scan on the list with both tuners, even the repetitive listings, (pictured below) with the DTA, I did several with out the DTA, but will try it fully again without the DTA and report back.
