Scanning for channels comes up empty

Yes, the blaster is a physical bit of hardware. He's saying you can still set it up without the blaster, just to check you can see the video coming through etc. It won't be able to change channels on the DTA, but it will show the channel the DTA is currently tuned to.

Sorry for the confusion I forgot you were using a Hauppauge HVR 2255 but trying to avoid paying licenses and already have h/w encoding

didn't your HVR-2255 come with a blaster? my 2250 did.

Some of the HVR-2255's come with an IR blaster, so it'd make sense to try this first if your device came with one.

Depends if you want an ir receiver too. This is cheap http://hauppauge.com/site/webstore2/webs...aster.html for just blasting.
