Yesterday MS released this major update to Windows 10.

After installing this update, some services (including the NPVR recording service) would no longer start automatically. It would appear in services as "stopped".

The solution in my case was in run -> services.msc to change "Automatic" to "Automatic - Delayed Start" and it seemed to have solved the problem and the service now starts as expected.

I could not find anything online about this and just happened to stumble upon this solution. Posting this just in case someone else runs into this.

I am having problems with the service hanging sometimes and a lot of times when it tries to record it says something about not getting data. It was fine before the upgrade.

I have just wasted half a day installing Windows 10 for a second time on the HTPC - I had it on for 3 weeks in July / August but reverted to 8.1 as there was no DTS Connect (5.1) over Optical.
It was meant to have been fixed in Windows 10 TH2 but is very flaky to say the least. Most of the new drivers on Windows update Catalog only still provide Stereo and the one from the Realtec Website - although now gives 5.1 DTS Connect, the Windows Volume Control only works on Left and Right Channels - Center and Rears remain on Full Volume all the time  And there were so many Audio Crashes to silence, which needed a reboot, that I thought I was back on Windows 98 with USB Sound Big Grin
Optical out has worked since Windows XP. Why can't they get it sorted in the year since they broke it?
Windows 8.1 Disk Image installed again. Hope they get a decent audio system before the (free for a year) comes to an end.
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh

If you've the disk space you can dual boot win8.1 and 10.

Make your self another partition on your hard disk and then either backup your win 8.1 using something like the free Seagate Acronis and restore it to the new partition or create a new win8.1 install in the new partition. Then upgrade that to win 10.

The only downside is that you will boot through the Win 10 boot screen which will mean your bootup into win 8.1 will be slower.

About 100GB is a good partition size.

It's the audio/video issues putting me off potentially upgrading. Right now everything "just works" and that's always a challenge to achieve Big Grin

Oh, and losing the use of TMT3 for blu-ray playback. All my discs are ripped to mkv so playing them in NPVR is the usual course of action, but I still like the option to fire up full menu support etc when first getting a disc and checking out the extras. Not sure what my Windows 10 options are for that as TMT3 isn't likely to work, and I'm not willing to shell out cash for anything.

The only things making me want to upgrade are proper 1080p support in Netflix (via the app), but I bet audio will be a pain with that. And maybe faster startup, but it's hardly a deal breaker.

Finally windows 7 just offered me the free upgrade to win10 (it's an oldish socket 775 motherboard).
I am currently pondering on whether to take the upgrade now or build a new PC first and then upgrade. (btw, I believe you apparently *can* move your free win10 upgrade to a new PC but it requires a call to MS.)

My PC is a dual core with 3GB RAM (1 stick went pop). It's running ok but it will possibly need to be upgraded in the next 12 months or so as I have quite a bit of software onto it ,Cyberlink powerDVD for bluray and both J River & Roon for audio. It would occasionally be nice to convert a bluray or video without it taking 12 hours.

Unfortunately I don't see any (technical) upside to moving to win10 atm, it's just about preparing for the future.

toying with the idea of upgrading the main gaming PC and moving the guts from that into the HTPC. have to see what the UKs version of black friday looks like....

Thanks!
Just what I needed.
The failure to auto-start has been bugging me for a while, but I hadn't gotten around to looking for a solution.

I gave it a quick blast last night - most stuff was fine as you'd expect, but I was having some issues with remote control stuff (via IRSS) and also ReClock. I quickly rolled back and will try again when I've got more time.

Booting up certainly wasn't any faster either Sad
Next time I may try it as a clean install.

Fastboot was already enabled for me so there was no change in this release but overall I find it faster than Win 7.

I've had it on my laptop all year where on the whole I've been reasonably happy with it. Guess I was hoping for more with the media PC but its SSD is quite old now.
