First off, thanks in advance for any help provided.

I'm attempting to set up a replacement for WMC so that I can upgrade my media center desktop to Windows 10. Currently, it's running Windows 8.1.

I just setup version 3.6.6 for the first time, following instructions as shown at the following link (that includes the setup of MC2XML as described in the article, as well): http://www.techhive.com/article/2962313/...ws-10.html.

Upon completing the setup (the listings did fill in under TV Guide, for the record, if that helps) I clicked "Live TV," and after a few seconds, was given the message "Unable to communicate with the recording service." I then looked and saw that the recording service wasn't running. So, I clicked "Start NPVR Service" in the start menu and was given the following error message:

I haven't a clue how to interpret this. I did try turning off Windows Firewall, just to eliminate that possibility, but it didn't work. I also ensured that NextPVR and NRecord were given clearance in the firewall.

Log folder should be attached. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Can you run Services.msc (win-key+R) and see if you have a service called "Npvr Recording Service" ?

That service doesn't show up in the list.

Edit: Silly me. I checked the list on my laptop, not the desktop! NPVR Recording Service does show up in the list, set to automatic, but not running. Attempting to start yields the error message:

"Windows could not start the NPVR Recording Service service on Local Computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified."

Something must have gone wrong during installation, try reinstalling npvr and run the installer as Administrator (right-click, Run as Administrator)

Did you install to the standard C:\ drive, or some other drive?

Ran the installer as administrator, same problem is persisting.

Edit: Installation went to the standard C drive, yes.

If you run regedit, and look at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NPVR Recording Service", does the ImagePath point to a valid filename? ie, "C:\Program Files\NPVR\NRecord.exe"

ImagePath is not showing up in that folder at all, actually.

Try starting a command prompt with 'run as administrator', change to the "C:\Program Files\NPVR\" directory, then run "nrecord.exe UNINSTALL" followed by "nrecord.exe INSTALL". Those need to be upper case.

That seems to have done it. Picture now shows up. Thanks so much for the help. Now to pick around and identify the right codecs to use! :-)
