2nd that, I'm also a long time UVNC user. It's great.

Ok - sorry for the delayed reply - have been really busy the last several days.

I'll give VNC a try. Problem is - everything I've got is Mac - except the PVR. So I'd rather use the screen control app in the Mac which is a derivative of VNC - but has been altered. Haven't found a compatible version yet with screen control, and a VNC server on another box (of any kind).

Yeah, RDP isn't the best, but it's not terrible either, but is probably the cause since it logs the other user out - even though I'm STILL the other user. Won't allow you to login as same user.

For the one who said use "control userpasswords2". I have - and it doesn't seem to "take" all the time. Occasional reboots I'm STILL prompted for a PW. Check userpasswords2, and it's still set properly, but just doesn't seem to "stick" all the time.

Did you launch the command prompt with admin privileges? (right click)
(and then reboot)

Yup - multiple times. If memory serves, 7-8 times over a 3 day period. Oh, and I tend to use Windows like the old joke - "Windows detected mouse moved - reboot?". So there's not much I do on Windows that I don't reboot - needed or not.

I've looked over UltraVNC - and I'd rather have something else. The concept of using the browser is nice - I DON'T want Java. Also - I'm not seeing the ability to use https. Even though I'm on my LAN, I'd like traffic encrypted. Just a stance I've taken over the last many years. So - anything else? I used to use RealVNC, but it went more commercial and hamstrung the "free" version, the original VNC hasn't been touched in years, etc.

I've got Chicken-of-the-VNC on my Mac - but it's long in the tooth as well. I'd rather get something more up-to-date and recently supported/updated.

You don't have to use the Java stuff. Just use the VNC Viewer program instead of a browser. There is also an encryption add-in available. See here: http://uvnc.com/downloads/encryption-plu...ugins.html

As for updates, the latest version of UltraVNC was just released in January. You can see the versions and release dates here: http://uvnc.com/downloads/ultravnc.html

If there's anything better out there, I've yet to find it. TeamViewer is also great, other than the nag screen that it leaves behind. Sad

As I said, C-ot-VNC is rather old, and it doesn't work quite right with Uvnc. Uvnc is supported on Mac/Linux ONLY using Java - no viewer. And not fond of using "more plugins" to provide something that should be there to start (security). I'll have to browse around to see what I can find that meets what I need. Sad that the built-in OSX ARD (shared screens), which is based on VNC, won't support basic VNC protocol.

Also, not interested in things that require a web "go-between" like TeamViewer, etc.

Then it would seem that you get to roll your own solution. Wink

Can try TightVNC too.

Anyway, even for those unencrypted versions of the VNC software, you always have the option of using SSH tunnel to encrypt the traffic.

Yeah, I'd thought of that - not my favorite way, and kind of cumbersome. I think the last time I did that was back in 2003 on Linux.
