Longtime user here. I'm just curious about all the people upgrading to W10, with all of the associated problems. I have a W7 NextPVR system and it's perfect. I don't care if W10 is free. I regret upgrading to 3.7.7 because it introduced problems.

I'm not going to do it again. Why is everyone else doing it.... ?

Can't pass up something that's "free"?

Win7 and NPVR 3.6.6 working perfect for me. But, no Kodi, no client, no comskip, not much of anything other than basic.
HTPC: Optiplex 7010, HDHR Prime/Avermedia Duet A188, NPVR 4.2.5, Win10 Pro

I doubt if it's as simple as that...

I have several machines - two of which are dedicated nPVR servers (running XP Pro and 3.7.7) which are doing great. I use other machines running XP or W7 for other things...

For someone with a single machine running all their stuff it's a different situation - if they have an xbox, maybe they are concerned about the windows live implications - there may be other applications which they want to future proof and if it was free, why not go for it...

After years of trying to make mobile phones look and work like PCs and failing, they are now going to make PCs work and look like mobile phones...

I'll certainly be avoiding w10 as long as I can but I can see why others might embrace it...

Rant over. Smile

For me it was the Boss upgraded her W7Pro system to get a few more years supported out of it (we don't replace our hardware all that often) & as it worked fine for her after a few weeks I decided to give it a go on my personal PC & it also worked fine for me. A little while later & after a few network tweaks etc. & getting the Recording service to start at startup I had NextPVR doing it's stuff fine & also the NMT's were working just fine with my PC as their server...... so after initially deciding I was going to leave the main server on W7 I took the plunge & also updated it to W10, after doing the same network & recording service tweaks it was also working mostly fine, but I did end up having to stop the HDD's going to sleep or the main 4TB new one wouldn't wake up properly & after doing that it has been working flawlessly for months now (I hope I didn't just put a hex on it with that comment)..... although I am still running NextPVR 3.5.7 as I wasn't really happy with either 3.6.6 or 3.7.7 during testing.

I've had no problems and have updated 3 desktops and 3 laptops in the last 3 months. I use all my computers a lot and work the crap out of them. W10 hasn't caused me one bit of trouble so far.
That said, W7 and W8 also worked fine for me. I build all my desktops myself so I know the pieces-parts are good but my circle of friends who use W10 have also not complained about problems.

I guess this is my question. When W7 works fine, and will be supported for a long time, why waste all this time upgrading for no tangible benefit? OK, I'm done here... maybe I have less time than everyone else, or place less value on "being up to date".

I did an image backup, upgraded and restored the old on my machines. Apparently this gets them on their authentication server should I want to get one of them to W10 sometimes in the future.

UI aside, Windows 10 is the most solid windows since Windows 2000. Simply, it runs everything better. Most people can't get past that ugly UI to see how well it runs.

Updated my partners laptop to win 10, looked ok, seemed to work but the learning curve for me was annoying to say the least. Took a while to realise that all you had to do was start typing something in and up it popped, I had been clicking on the "Search" icon and had all kinds of annoying experiences, not finding stuff I knew was there and basically treating me like an idiot.
Then came the biggest bugbear... updates. Could no longer rely on being able to use the laptop when we wanted to... day after day "for your convenience widows is playing with itself and you should just go away and have lunch or something" and no way to reschedule or turn off updates on a "Home Premium" installation, well not that I could find.
All in all an insulting experience and after a few days running it on the home system, "upgrade" from Win 7 pro, I rolled back to 7., broke most drivers and even today I cant get bluetooth to work at all but, humph, never used it anyway. The system (Dell 6420 laptop) runs NPVR with 2 TBS 5925 tuners as a back-end for Kodi and MediaMonkey for tunes. We control the whole caboose from either a cellphone (for MediaMonkey with MM Remote) or a rather nice Logitec K830 wireless keyboard with trackpad and it all runs fine on 7 Pro.
So, my take.... If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I upgraded all my systems to W10 because it offers the best Windows security. It's also been solid as a rock, whether on my desktop, two laptops and the PVR. No problems at all. The servers run Linux & FreeBSD of course, though...
- Silent client PVR: HDPlex HS.1 aluminium fanless case / Thin-ITX ASRock H81TM-ITX motherboard / Intel Celeron 1850T CPU / 4GB RAM / 120GB SSD / TBS6982 DBS-S2 dual-tuner card / Win10+nPVR+Plex Media Player feeding LG OLED55B6V + Anthem MRX510 AV Receiver / PMC GB1 / B&W / REL speakers.
- Noisy NAS: Xeon / Intel mobo / 16GB RAM / FreeNAS + Ubuntu VMs on VMware ESXi + 12TB RAID
running Plex Media Server
