Hi,

It would be a nice feature to be able to open the ports needed for external streaming on firewalls using UPnP programmatic port forwarding...

Currently, it is quite a nuisance for me to make this work (needless to say I haven't quite understood how to do it), as for a strange reason opening port 8866 on my router is not enough for external access...also in the logs I see listeners are enabled on other ports, so it is quite confusing...

Officially all the built in streaming stuff is designed for local networks, and I wouldn't want to open the users to any risk from the outside world.

Also, most routers have the ability to do that disabled by default.

Thank you for your reply sub. If it is per design and does not work I'll understand it. However, as routers have an option to allow the same, I believe it would be nothing wrong to also give the option to users of Nextpvr to open the ports on the router if the wish to (via clicking a button for instance, and obviously after having enabled the particular feature on the router as well). It would be a pity not to be able to have our local channels available when travelling overseas for instance...

Which of course would go perfectly together with transcoding capability as usually upload bandwidth is limited.... :-)

If you can't even open up 8866 by yourself and port forward from your router then I would think again about installing a remote web server. NextPVR is not a hardened web server and someone who knows what they are doing could likely take over your computer remotely. Better to understand the risks and know options then just clicking buttons.

It does work remotely, but as Martin says above, I would only really want people that know what they're doing opening up their machine to the outside world. The primary focus has been use on the user's own home network, where there is a lot less to be concerned about.

Dears,

For sure I can open the 8866 port, both UDP, TCP, whatever you name it, I've done it. No matter what though I do, Kodi with nextpvr addon won't play it remotely...
I can even open VPN to my home and play remotely, but I would like to avoid VPN overhead.
So I do understand what that means very well.
In the getting protected Vs. having a choice debate though, I would always choose having a choice...

Can you view the web app remotely at http://ipaddress:8866/modern/index.html? If so, then your port forwarding is working.

To get Kodi working remotely, you'll need to tick 'Allow Remote Access' on the Settings->Clients screen. You may also need to stop the software, edit config.xml to set <AllowRemoteStreaming>true</AllowRemoteStreaming>

Thanks Sub, I will try that out.
