Why is NextPVR recording multiple instances of the same show?

Not likely.  I have 6 tuners and in 6 years I have never had all 6 recording at once and there are only 4-5 channels I ever record from.  I have a cable box for normal DVR functions, the HTPC is solely for my movie and music collections....at the moment.
