Hi

I have updated the My Music database which is configured to access my large (1800 CDs) mp3 collection over a wi-fi (g) network share.

However, when I go into my music and select one of the folders, it takes forever to bring up the list. In fact a lot of the time it never brings up the list.

I would have thought that with a local database, it should bring up the album list immediately. Is My Music trying to access the local share before bringing up the list?

I am struggling to find an acceptable way of playing my mp3 collection via gb-pvr atm. I did try building a m3u playlist that pointed to a (sample) 73 albums but gb-pvr crashed when trying to access this.

Does anyone have good experience of accessing a large mp3 collection over a network?

thanks

the the filelist mask and playlist mask to "%FILENAME%" (or something like that, its in the wiki), that may help.

Thanks for the quick reply reven.

Ah so you mean that obscure snippit of info in the wiki (under My Music) that says..

"NOTE: If %FILENAME% is found anywhere in the FileList or Playlist mask the tag will not be loaded and the files name minus the extension will be displayed (this will help slow computers and when loading a large playlist since the information does not need to be looked up)."

(doh!)

So the problem is that My Music is trying to retieve the ID3 tags from the files... humm, that WOULD take a while!

ok, well I set filelist to %FILENAME% but it didn;t make any difference - no response when selecting one of the 3 folders.

I have just nuked and am currently rebuilding mydatabase.db so see if that helps.

thanks

You could also try the Music Player plugin it seems to work well and has the Jukebox built in.

oooh - looking forward to test driving both of them

My Music looks like it is going in the right direction as it maintains a local db. With 1800 albums accessed over a wi-fi network, for me this is going to be essential. Ditto photos (about 2GB worth).

If there were some way of scheduling a regular update of the db, that would be cool but not essential. Even (manually) updating a local db every week would be fine.

cubsfan: I tried music player but this didn't really seem to work well for me. I set it to cache all folders (0) which it eventually did, but it's behaviour was somehat erratic when trying to navigate the folders.

thanks for the feedback guys and sorry for the delay, I forgot to set my profile to email me when threads that i have posted to are updated.

they both have done this for quite some time (like since jan)

you're the second person to ask for something like this in the last couple of days (which was the first time ever), whats the point? it doesnt take long to update this info if you are just browsing around, like entering a folder with 38 songs on it (david bowie best of) took about 1.5 seconds the frist time for me (reading and adding the songs to the db) and after that pretty much instant. i can see the point if it was a huge slow task, but its not.

someone else could do this if they wanted, but its a waste of time.

errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr i dont like batches...... i do see a tiny point with music, im just in a bad mood. ask me when its beta testing, hopefully i will be in a better mood by then (another user pissed me off, so this rude message is because of that, sorry).

yes, that is what I like about them, it's an excellent way to do it.
Only, I still can't get it to stop retrieving the mp3 metadata over the network (tried %FILENAME) so it is still very slow atm. Anyway, I've got much bigger problems that that atm. pc is crashing all the time and nova-t usb is giving me loads of problems.

that's ok. Don't let them get you down. I for one really appreciate what you have done for this project. For me, My Videos makes gbpvr.

im in a much better mood now Smile

um i should have my music 3 out for beta testing in a week or two, just got one major issue (cd burning, might not be able to get around this) and just other sort methods
- top 100
- rating

ive done "genre" so it will be simple to add top 100 and rating (now that i figured out a way to do them).

this version is much more stable, and runs a lot better on my machine (my pvr had issues with the last version, i figured it was just a codec or something, but this version runs fine so must have been a major bug somewhere).

all and all its coming out really nicely (putting way more effort into the interface and communicating the state of the system back to the user), its kicks the old ones arse really.

Not sure if the old one did or not but will this one have the ability to queue music up into a playlist?
