I'm using Kodi und a Firestick, with the NextPVR add-on.

As has been discussed here in a few threads, there are problems with interlacing (horizontal bars) when watching free to air TV (Australia, SD and HD channels), and the general consensus seems to be that the Firestick isn't powerful enough to properly deinterlace the video stream.

My question, is what device IS powerful enough, other than a PC or Raspberry?
Has anyone got any experience with an Nvidia Shield or similar? Firestick 4k?

Another solution would be to transcode the video stream prior to sending it from the NextPVR server to the Firestick/Kodi, but I seem to have read that there are no plans for this functionality?

Any advice would be appreciated.

You're probably be better off finding a device that can do proper deinterlacing, rather than wishing for transcoding. Transcoding would mean an additional 5+ seconds to change channels, which is probably not something you'd want.

The original Firestick did not do deinterlacing and there were issues even on the 4k with h264 deinterlacing which should be fixed now. The RPi 4 can't do mpeg2 with h/w decoding which is another issue.

You can configure Kodi Matrix to use backend transcoding of Live TV but you are stuck with recording which would have to be preprocessed.

Best to follow this thread https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252916 I prefer Amlogic devices with Coreelec if you don't nee Android apps.
