getting kodi to use nextpvr

I am a total newbie to Linux and my first project is a media server. 

Ubuntu 20.04.2 desktop
Kodi 18.9
NextPVR Version: 5.1.0.201216

First, I tried to install NextPVR using the PPA from the Kodi website. That gave me an "unknown error" and would not enable or let me uninstall in Kodi.

After that, I was able to get the NextPVR service installed and running. I have not added any devices or channels yet, but NextPVR is viewable with the web interface.

But now that NextPVR is working, I do not know how to get Kodi to see it as an add-on.

I dug around and deleted the nextpvr folder from the addons in the usr/share/kodi/addons folder to see if it would make Kodi look somewhere else. No soap.

I don't know where to go from here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

NextPVR isn't available via a PPA so I assume you mean Kodi. After you Kodi install Kodi you need to follow the instructions on the Kodi to install kodi-pvr-nextpvr from the PPA too. https://kodi.wiki/view/Ubuntu_PVR_add-ons

You should install Matrix instead of Leia though since it is almost ready for release. After installing the addon when you run the configuration it will automatically configure everything for basic operation.

If you don't know much about Ubuntu and your goal is simply a media centre, I strongly suggest you try Libreelec assuming you are running on x64

Yes, I did. But it was after I had tried to install NextPVR from the Kodi Ubuntu instructions ( https://kodi.wiki/view/Ubuntu_PVR_add-ons). The result from that attempt was an "unexplained error" and Kodi would not let me remove the PVR or use it. When I got NextPVR working using the procedure at github, Kodi paid no attention to it and did not respond when I tried adding it again following the kodi.wiki procedure.

My task for today is to uninstall Kodi Leia and install Matrix. I think wiping Kodi and starting again is a good idea given the failures I've had and my limited knowledge.

Do I need to remove the NextPVR service? I have read that you need to get NextPVR working before Kodi though I'm not sure exactly what that means.

No ... you shouldn't need to re-install NextPVR.

Before trying anything in Kodi ...  Confirm that you can use the NextPVR Web App to record a show and playback the recording.

If NextPVR web is working you don't need to anything.

Note assuming you used apt to install you would need to use apt to uninstall not Kodi.

Well, this was prophetic:

Just because I could see NextPVR in a web interface did not mean it was working. I loaded a few IPTV channels and got 

[b]Failed to start requested stream[/b]

Tracing some of the traffic on this forum, I set about setting my folder group to "video" of which nextpvr is a member.

That is done, confirmed by ls -l.

Still no joy. 

I've attached the log file with the fondest hopes that it will tell you something.

I do appreciate your help. I am learning bit by bit. The problem is it goes away!

You need to attached the zipped logs from the browser not the log files directly.

The forum silently ignores attachments that are bigger tham 2MB ... Did you use NextPVR Web App to zip the logs as described at ... https://github.com/sub3/NextPVR/wiki/get-help
