Extras device - using hardware video encoder

Hi - apologies if this is a somewhat open question, but I am now looking at getting a video encoder to use with my extras device to replace VLC. The bit I could use some advice on though is what methods are out there to take an encoded signal from the HDMI out and get it into NPVR? The output will be in a transport stream, but because it's hardware im not sure what to do with the output...

The host O/S makes a difference but I will answer based on Windows platform since I know that is what you are using.

1) Hauppauge HPVR or Colossus direct support in NextPVR no extra needed on Windows.

2) HDMI network encoders. There are many devices on sites like Amazon and Alibaba that will encode HDMI to network ts streams you could easily capture via an extra

3) Direct show devices using ffmpeg as I recommended to you before. These can be be from the $20 grabbers on Amazon up to the high end device you used before. Most of these devices do not do h/w encoding so you typically are responsible for transcoding from raw or mjpeg video and pcm audio to a compatible format.

Hi - yes, as you may remember 4k is a requirement for me. If it wasnt I would just have bought 2 Colossus cards and not had half the problems that I have experienced. Took some time off working on this and inbetween the exact same VLC commands I was using previously for encoding now no longer work. As the price of them have come down a lot, I'm now looking at a hardware based solution. Do you have any links to a specific network device? How would this work? The device broadcasts a transport signal from an IP address and the extras device picks that up?

I do remember you were using 4K before but that wasn't mentioned in your question so you really need to be more specific. If you have a 60fps requirement in or out you are going to have trouble.

4k at 30fps will do for now. There are several devices that will encode to that standard, however I havent looked for a networked one yet...

The network encoders that deliver 4k 30fps aren't cheap but they do h265/h264 h/w encoding with 2 channel AAC audio. They typically give you multiple encoding options on different pages.

Ok, I get it...looking at some units online you can pick a 4K one up for a few hundred quid. I have other things to work on for now that dont cost anything, so I might wait till I have progressed all the programming a bit further before I start shelling out on big ticket items. Thanks for your input anyway...
