Can't change channels in NextPVR. Only from cmd line.

At first I tried a fresh install changing device settings using Firefox.  I would get a blank video screen (huh?). 

FYI, firefox blocks video by default. From memory the first time you try playing video in the web app using Firefox, you need to click to the left side of the url address bar and enable video playback. From then on it'll be fine.

-Keyboard shortcuts.  It would be nice to have a list of shortcut keys.  It looks like the escape key is one of them. 

Are you running the nextpvr.exe front end? It has keyboard shortcuts. The web application does not - it's intended to be driven by a user with a mouse.

-It would nice to be able to be able to see channels that I can't get listings for.  I have a channel from Spain that xmltvlistings doesn't carry (ch.460).  It would be nice to be able to add that channel even if the show names won't appear in the listings matrix.  That way I could at least watch the channel.  Maybe there are options on the right side of wrenches (or spanners) I'm not seeing?  I've seen some screenshots that show different options there. 

You can't currently manually add channels. There is nothing to stop you creating a small xmltv file with the list of channels, and no listings, which you can import alongside your other channels.

The screenshots your saw with different options were probably the old v4 app. It was very different.

-Quick record vs record?  I'm not sure what the difference is.

'quick record' is effectively 'recording this episode using whatever the defaults are'.

'record' pops up a window with various options, so you can set it to be a one-off or recurring recordings, number of episodes to keep, padding etc. ie, when you want to tweak the options used.

-Tray option to access the program and the program itself won't work until the icon goes from gray to green.  If I open the program before the icon has gone green I get an "unable to connect to remote server" error message and the program won't work.  It seems to take me 2-3 minutes for the icon to turn green after I turn on the computer.  This is not a biggie since I'm used to waiting for Windows to start up.  But at first I thought, "oh no, the program doesn't work again".

The NextPVR service defaults to delayed start, because some users have tuners that take a little bit of time to be functional after windows starts. Most likely you can go into the service settings and switch it to autostart instead, and it'll windows will start it earlier. Personally I just leave my server running, so it's not something I think about.

-NextPVRtray isn't added automatically to the list of programs listed by pressing the bottom left Windows button.  So when I right-clicked and exited the small tray icon that has the N in a green square at one point, I had to go searching for the .exe file in the program folder.

My comments:

- the tray app is of zero value to me, I consider just adds overhead, I am glad it is not installed by default.  There is no right or wrong on this.  The tray app is not designed as a launcher, use a short cut instead.

- When you want to "watch" just hit play instead and save a step.   I do feel resume should supersede watch on recordings and if you hit play on a recording

- quick recording simply gives default recording options

Thanks to everyone who provided their input on this thread. I printed all the keyboard shortcuts you referred me to.

The program is "powerful" which usually means there's a learning curve involved. I'll have to familiarize myself more with NextPVR. :-)

I'm happy to have found a replacement to my beloved BeyondTV. I rode that program 'til the wheels fell off.

I was running nextpvr frontend.  The keyboard shortcuts should work once I learn them.

Would you provide or point me to an example of a short xlmtv file that would add one channel?   I guess I could copy the entries to add maybe up to 5 channels that weren't covered by the xmltvlistings download.   But if I could at least channel 460 to work I'd be happy.

Why not just use your current XMLTV process and comment out the download line in UpdateEPG.bat while you are testing and configuring?

Before I write anything, let me point out that I wasn't a computer science major in college.  I was a civil engineering major decades ago.

I tried copying your lines of code into a notepad text file, changed the extension to .xml, then tried inserting that list into NextPVR.  That didn't work.  So I tried modifying the .xml file I got from the xmllistings website.   Then just copied your text there and tried insert that file.  That also didn't work.

I need 29 channels to show up inside NextPVR, which I can't get the tv listings for, but exist on my directv service.  Here's how I tried using notepad (but just showing three channels here):

Now, I realize I could be way off on this somehow.  When I go into settings>devices>select the tv tuner card>import channels>enter the xmltv file location on my hard drive, the location of the ir blaster, then click "import", nothing happens. 

I think the list of channels was supposed to appear, I would click save at the bottom, then the channels would be added to the channels that came directly from the xmltv website. 

I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what.  My computer syntax is mainly copying but not really understanding what's going on.  

I'm attaching file I created that has the 29 channels I need to add but with the comment "no listings" appearing.   I hope you can help me out and thus help future users.  I had to upload it as a text file because the website wouldn't let me upload it with a .xml extension.

Would you give me more detail about this method?  I'm not sure how to access UpdateEPG.bat. 

Maybe you're familiar enough code that you can modify the goofy code I created by mimicking what someone posted?
