With the coming demise of free TVDB API in October it would be nice if NextPVR used the TMDB API for TV shows.  Currently I think it is restricted to movies.  It is a pretty complete API and I think it offers more shows than TV Maze.

It already looks for show artwork on TMDB, but the priority of the artwork sources varies depending on if it's a movie (based on genre, duration, or show identifier). ie, TMDB is top priority if movie, last priority if it thinks it isn't a movie.

Actually, checking the code, that isn't entirely correct. If the EPG source was Schedules Direct, where it knows for sure if it is a movie or not, it only uses TMDB when it is a movie. I'll add it for other shows.

After experimenting a bit, I found it didn't work very well for TV in it's current state. I've made changes to the next release which help.

Thanks a lot. Perhaps the issues you found were why I thought it wasn't working.

I've attached an updated dll with the improved TheMovieDB logic.

For non-Schedules Direct users, it's best to have both TheMovieDB and TVMaze enabled. TheMovieDB is nice and fast, but is lacking a landscape picture. With both enabled, it'll typically download the poster and fanart from TheMovieDB, and the landscape picture from TVMaze. (it will download from both sites to get the set of 3 images)

TheTVDB option is gone in the next release.

Doesn't the tmdb backdrop include both landscape and fanart images? For me it is just NextPVR semantics for 16x9 and I don't even see the value of downloading fanart when 1080p or higher landscape is available. Real fanart is a different beast.

TMDB provides two images. A portrait style poster image, and a landscape style backdrop image.

For TMDB artwork NextPVR will download the backdrop as the fanart image. In NextPVR.exe and web app, it'll use this fanart image as the background for the screen/page. Because it's shown as a large image on the screen, it needs to be fairly high resolution.

The artwork varies a bit depending on where it's coming from. Quite often the fanart images don't have logos etc on them. The landscape images usually will. Being able to show them both together gives a bit richer experience.

NextPVR will fallback to using the larger fanart image for the landscape image if another landscape image is not available. Generally this looks fine.

My feeling is that the tvdb backdrop be considered landscape not fanart. I still fell the concept of landscape being lower res is kind of a NextPVR thing. Clients like Kodi and Emby don't even request fanart so it would be nice to use config.xml to disable fanart downloads.

One day of if you are able to get back to image selection via fixing NextPVR or a new interface, it would be nice to choice the poster and landscape image we want in client

Perhaps @pkscout you have some thoughts on what the backdrop should be, you would have more experience with it.

At the end of the day, NextPVR is currently actively using the three types of artwork, and they're usually available, so it's probably not worth changing the approach too much.

Ulitmately they're calling it a backdrop, and that is what NextPVR is using for. ie, backdrop behind things. If you look at the attached images, you'll see they're quite often different sorts of images. Often backdrops have less branding - these are nice to use backdrops when you've already selected that particular show. When it's a list of multiple shows, it's nice to have the branding include. (ie, see the Kardashians example, if you were browsing through a list of shows you record, it'd be better to see the landscape version with show name, instead of the non-branded fanart/backdrop)

I think Schedules Direct is about the only place I've made a decision about what size artwork to download, and this was years ago, when big artwork might have been an impediment for speed, both on the slower download from the internet, and the slower rendering on weaker clients. I'm happy to revisit those if you'd prefer it defaults to bigger images for SD.

With other artwork service, I'm pretty much just using whatever they had available.

You can set <DownloadFanArt> to false if you don't want to download fanart images.
