So here is the deal. I am hoping to make a home media server. The setup I envision is simple: a server that hosts my media, and kodi clients to play it. This means that no transcoding would be required on the server end, if my understanding is correct. Maybe one day I will run jellyfin, but for now that is a ways off.
Now, I have tried to make a test server using a think station 7220 with a 2.4gz q6600 CPU, 1666 4GB ram. This is running lubuntu 18.10. Now, I installed kodi on this server and had a test video loaded in (mythbusters). I then tried to play the episode, streamed from the server, on a laptop. While it did play, I got a message saying the source read rate is too slow. This became evident as the video would have to buffer every few minutes.
So, what am I doing wrong? applinked What can I do better? Am I better off buying a dedicated NAS bay?
Thanks all!
