Hi.

I have nPVR v5 installed on my Linux (version below) but it regularly fails to record preset recordings off my HDHOMERUN.   I set up recordings from the same channel but one records and the other one fails. After I get the errors I cannot even view that same channel.  Yet when I launch VLC and access the tuner I can immediately watch that channel.

2 x log files and a screenshot attached.

Is it perhaps a timeout issue?

Thanks!

Does your HDHR always get the same IP from your router? NextPVR expects this but that is failing to connect

No route to host [::ffff:192.168.1.115]:5004 (192.168.1.115:5004)

so either the IP is changed or there are other network issues. A poorly configured VPN or firewall might also cause this.

Perhaps log into your HDHR's web page and check its log http://ip/log.html

Hi Martin

Bu the way, I also gave up on my Linux OS (Debian 11) and switched to Win11 too, but it, too, had the same issues.

No special VPN enabled or firewall changes (on both OSs).  And my router DHCP leases are at least 24 hours (but I will double check).

I use the "Fing" app on my Android phone, so will check the IP address of my HDHOMERUN at random times over 2 days.

Otherwise I have long suspected my LAN switch to be... "dodgy", so I shall order a replacement right away (both the computer and the HDHOMERUN are directly wired through that switch).

Still, it is frustrating, as when watching a channel via VLC works immediately and perfectly every time!

Will respond here ow it goes.

Stay tuned...

Thanks!

For NextPVR the lease time is not important, but it needs to be renewed with the same IP or you need to restart NextPVR.

Did the HDHR logs show anything? VLC won't work if the IP can't be found either.

My HD Homerun / NextPVR combination sometimes acts up when there's a firmware update waiting. I use a HDTC-2US and i just noticed that a new firmware was released on 2023-03-03 and it's sitting there waiting for a reboot of the Homerun.

ETA: what does the HD Homerun tuner status show, when you have this conflict happen?
Pi4, wired, running Bullseye, 64 bit, latest NextPVR installed. Kodi 19.4 -- looking at Pi5 and LE on the same machine.

SOLVED

Thanks for Martin's response I set my WiFi Router to lock the IP Address of the HDHOMERUN with it's MAC address.  Now the IP address is 'static', and the problem has gone away.

It appears VLC uses network device name while nextPVR uses the device IP address - therein the difference why it "worked" with VLC but "failed" with nextPVR.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR RESPONSES.

For VLC you probably don't leave it running for many days where the lease becomes important. There are a couple of ways sub could improve NextPVR to handle the HDHR better though, so I can

- turn off the bad default to disable the HDHR if it is not online when NextPVR starts. It maybe helps new users with the web interface but creates more problems then it is worth IMO

- use deviceid.local mDNS names instead of IP when it fails to get the current IP or optionally just use deviceid.local

- improve support for the Flex 4K for ATSC 3.0 channels.

@TheRealRoland NextPVR will mark it unavailable in the device list so it won't show in tuner status.

You're right there, I definitely close VLC each time I finish with it whether it be 6 or 60 minutes.

And so I don't think any change to nPVR is necessary.  Just good to know this can be a problem and how to ensure it can't happen.

By the way recordings are working flawlessly now with the 'static' IP address change setting (on my router, tied to the tuner MAC address).

THANKS

My suggestions were to sub, since I don't think I user should have to wait until the lose a recording to figure find out this problem. Also not everyone is capable of setting their router to assign a fixed IP.

Or perhaps it is just my faulty LAN Ethernet switch.

No drama to change a (now) fully functioning solution and cause more issues than it might fix.  If it ain't broke, etc, etc...

In technology it is important to remember  PBCK issues (Problem Between Chair and Keyboard) are 90% of the problem.

The worst thing with most solutions is that marketing or customer "wishes" change software into bloatware.
