Hey everybody,

Is there a particular upgrade path / moving configuration files, etc. possible from a pi4 running bullseye to a pi5 that runs mx23.3 which itself is called "a respin of Raspberry Pi OS with a MX setup and tool set "?

Is it a matter of copying certain configuration files, or is it better to do a clean install and then configure everything, adding schedulesdirect info, etc. ?

I would install new and then copy /var/opt/nextpvr from the old system to see how it works. If you are copying recording folders then all the path names would have to match.

You might also want to try LibreElec it would be a waste to run a Pi5 without a good client. IMO, from a NextPVR server perspective there is very little to be gained uprgrading, outside of internal storage, since it still can't transcode fast enough.

Yeah, that's what i was thinking. upgrade to the pi5, figure out the proper os to run, then a client like kodi, or libreelec from the start.

Doing so on the pi4 already (nextpvr and kodi), but sometimes when it's recording and running kodi, things get jammed up.

ETA: thanks for the quick reply!
ETA2: not going to copy the recordings folder. Never really kept those in sync - constantly copying/deleting movies from the /recordings folder, without syncing afterwards,

But are running LE or Debian? With LE you should be able to run a client and NextPVR on the same box, RPi4/5, you might have better luck.

On the pi4 i'm running the standard pi os, debian bullseye, still able to run nextpvr and kodi on the same box. but not comfortably. havent done any transcoding after recording though. tried that, but that was too much of the little pi4. recordings suffered on my install. while transcoding.

eta: i'll post an update in a new thread once i got the pi5, nvme hat, libreelec going.

My point is LE is a better OS choice if you want client playback. The RPi5 won't help too much with transcoding unfortunately, it still can't do real time and take a lot of CPU with NextPVR defaults. Witht the RPi5 all h264 is CPU too there is no optimization possible unless you want HEVC.

i'll read up on HEVC and whether this is possible on the pi5. i don't care about 4k quality, since i'm mostly grabbing Turner Movie Channel (TMC) or 1080p HD WTTW (US PBS documentaries).

And soon my cable provider will quit using clearQam, so my little trusty silicondust tuner may become obsolete altogether (looking at you, Mediacom!)

dunno what to do then Big Grin
