EPG shows blank

Does the guide update while a recording is taking place? I have alos been losing the info in the guide. I thought my problem of losing the guide was because I scheduled a recording at the updating time. I changed the time, but haven't had it changed long enough to know if it is working. I'm going to change it to a daytime time.
