Server: Windows 11 HTPC
Client: Chrome and Jellyfin on Roku
Hardware: Avermedia 716x
Version: v7.0.0.241105
Video Encoder: CPU
Problem: Cannot seek through an in-progress recording.

Basically, I'm trying to time-shift a live sporting event, but it's not working.
  • Jellyfin/Roku: I can watch the recording from the beginning but the remote buttons don't do anything at all.
  • Jellyfin/Web: scroll bar doesn't show the full length of the recording, but it does "grow" as I watch the recording, so I can skip ahead, watch for a minute or so until the recording "grows" by another 4-5 minutes, and skip then ahead some more.
  • NextPVR/Web and NextPVR/Desktop:, I can play a live recording, and use the mouse to seek to the part of the recording I want, but it doesn't start playing at that location.

If I play the .ts file directly on the server machine using VLC, it works okay. If I wait until the recording is over, it also plays okay on any client.

Thanks!

Ultimately NextPVR has no control over how playback in Jellyfin works. It'll be up to them to make sure seeking etc works. NextPVR gives them everything they need, but they'd still need to put in some effort to deal with the fact it's still a growing stream etc.

You should be able to seek in NextPVR's frontend though. I just gave it a quick check here and it looked like it was working ok. Were you trying in the NextPVR Desktop Client, or the webapp, or something else?

Yeah I'm not surprised/worried about Jellyfin support, just wanted to provide an additional data point.

This was using the the NextPVR webapp AND the NextPVR Windows desktop client. Same behavior in both places.

Which NextPVR cient and are you using thumbnails?  UI clients can be pretty good and Kodi should work with in-progress as well.  I have never tested this with NextPVR.exe but there was a problem with resume.

Both the webclient and the windows native client. I do have "Recording Thumbnails" set to "While Recording". The thumbnails do show up and are correct when I move the time slider. It won't start playing at that location, though, just restarts from the beginning.

What version of the NVPR software are you running? (can be seen from the WEB settings page)

That bug was known about and has been fixed but you may not be running the fixed version.

My experience it that using your use case of a) thumbnails with in progress and b) using a mouse in NextPVR.exe for skipping is probably the worst case scenario, although mousing is significantly enhanced in the coming update. NextPVR is primarily for remote control usage not a desktop.

Note where you click on the timeline may not even have thumbnails yet.

If you move thumbnail creation to after recording do things improve? If not you may wish to try nlite or yauiclient UI clients have been tested a little bit more for in-progress sports recordings although again keyboard skipping is better. Until the next release (not to far away) Koid would be the best bet with mouse support.
