I compiled NLite on Debian Sid, but the binary itself never displays the UI. All I see is a black screen, with repeated console output about rendering.

Code:
<activity>
  <needsRendering>false</needsRendering>
</activity>

The outcome was the same on a system with NextPVR server installed and when passing a remote IP address on the command line.

I tried on two separate systems with the same result.

Is NLite still supported on Linux, or should I look at using Jellyfin or Emby, for example?

Sub never updated nlite past the v4 API, and he took it a different Windows specific direction after that. The code probably could be made to work but I opted to use libmpv and not libvlc for my own multiplatform UI client yauiiclient.

I think you will find that Kodi is going to be the best client for Linux using KNEWC if you want the NextPVR UI. The easiest Linux solution will be LibreELEC.

The challenge for me with yauclient are the permutations involved

- platform x64, arm32, aaarch64 (and others)
- choice of distro
- version of distro
- framebuffer, x, wayland or vulkan graphics
- alsa or pipewire audio

plus the technical challenges
- configuring h/w decoding
- audio passthrough
- IR remote control hooks.

and for the few users that actually want a yauclient for Linux I don't see it worth the time building it or supporting it.

Thanks, Martin - and apologies for my slow reply.

I've begun looking into the various Kodi options. It's far better than I remember, and it's very easy to install the NextPVR add-on.

I upcycled my old (low end in 2015) Windows 10 machine to linux to become a bedroom NextPVR client.

Tried LibreELEC but gave up because there's no hibernation support and for noise/light pollution and power consumption reasons hibernation is a must.

Tried xubuntu which works well on old PCs and a youtube video showed me how to enable hibernation (much more complicated than a checkbox). I didn't pay attention but should have picked the LTS (long term support) version as is gets much longer support than the regular version and I want a set it and forget it kind of setup.

The kodi version installed by the package manager on xubuntu runs fine and has "debian" branded into the GUI. With the NextPVR kodi addon it's a much smoother NextPVR client than the raspberrypi 3 it replaced.

I put the PC in/out of hibernation with my normal TV provider's remote thanks to a plug I mentioned on the hardware subforum.
