reoccuring vs recurring

Bummer. I must admit that recurring looks wrong to me, even if it is right (or at least a correct choice -- I liked the explanation from Brian about why both are right; you can learn so much when using GBPVR).

I would say reoccur. Yahoo thesaurus have them both listed as meaning the same thing. For us who don't speak English (natively) "reoccur" is easier to "figure out". I know what occur means, and I know what the prefix "re" means. But I had to look up recur, because - as someone else mentioned earlier - cur is not a word that I can easily just prefix and understand =)

Well, as I said, they are both valid to my mind although reoccur is probably more common in daily language. I woud use 'recur' more in a technical sense as in a decimal number being 'nine point nine recurring' (for 9.9999......etc.) or a 'recursive search' of a database etc.

I think stefan's reasoning possibly clinches it for reoccurring though. Being able to split words in this way is useful for people who aren't native speakers. It doesn't always make sense though, e.g., one sense of 'to cycle' meaning to proceed by bicycle, 'to recycle' - urrrm, ride the same route again?

I'd vote for reoccuring too, recurring to me implies repeating to the point of infinity as in the mathematical example above.

Unless, of course, you're recording Star Trek where "recurr", by my own definition would probably be correct
