Whilst I'm getting a new case sorted out for the PC that will eventually go under the telly, we're testing things out on a laptop that my wife frequently uses for her email etc.

When GBPVR installs, it is only installed for the current user it seems. So if she's logged in, is the recording service still running and will it still record programs? if not, can I set up GBPVR so it can work regardless of who is logged in?

Regards
Dave

The recording service is a service, and will record, no matter who is logged in, or even if nobody is logged in.
If you want the program available for all users, log in as administrator, and install it. This should give you the whole program for all users.
You can never have enough tuners!

Just create a shortcut to gbpvr.exe on the other users desktop and you should be away.

I tried copying the shortcuts from my start menu to all users/start menu (which is what I'd normally do) but they refused to work correctly when I logged on as her. She's got a limited user account, could that have something to do with it?

When I originally installed GB-PVR I was logged in as administrator. But it only installed for my user account.

I set off a recording earlier and have been logged in since before it started as my wife and I can see data going into the file - so that's definately working which is great. From what reboot said I take it that it doesn't matter if I use fast user switching or log off/on properly so that's all good.

One final question - are there any restrictions on watching recorded shows or other video files while simultanously recording something? is it basically HD/RAM/CPU dependent?

Probably. I remember someone else saying this caused them a problem in the past. I dont use it (or test) this way though, so you're on your own as to what could cause it.

Because the card is doing all the hard work recording, playback depends on your CPU and GPU power. If your system can do it, no problem.
There are sometimes issues with playback from the same physical hard drive as a recording (worse if it's a different partition on the same drive), during recording, but only with slower drives on IDE interfaces. SATA seems fast enough to do both.

I installed GB-PVR as administrator. Moving the created Start Menu folder to the All Users folder also didn't work for me, and I tried with admin privileges turned on. The links created by the installer do not seem to be normal shortcuts. Viewing the properties of the links when logged in as the non-installing user brings up a bunch of empty fields. Viewing the file in Notepad shows some references to files within the administrator user's documents folder. I don't know what type of shortcuts these are, but they aren't the normal ones created by "create shortcut" in the context menu.

As Sub says, just create a normal shortcut to the program exe on the user's desktop or elsewhere and it works. (I did this with the config, too.) Also, you can create a shortcut to the tray in your startup folder if you want.

I also run in a limited user account, and have found that as stated, you must use shortcuts that point to the actual executable (C:\Program Files\devnz\gbpvr\gbpvr.exe or whatever you are trying to run).

However, in addition, you must do the following:
Give "Modify" permission to the devnz folder. To do this, you log in as Administrator, right-click on the "devnz" folder (in C:\Program Files), select properties and then the Security tab, and check "Modify" for the user that you want to grant access to.

In addition, I also give full permission to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/devnz registry folder using regedt32 for the limited user account in question. This may not be necessary in all cases, but it seems to help prevent registry hangs when logging off.

I have learned how to get just about anything running in a limited user account, but it would help if more software were compatible with it.

Minor PostScript:

All seems to be working well running GBPVR as a User except Net Radio.

Seems user-related since it works logged in as Administrator.

When it fails as a user I get the following message in the log:

FindFilterByName failed to locate filter: GB-PVR Shoutcast

Any suggestions?
