Addressing the whole "idiot proofing" and/or "hand holding" comments - I'm sorry but HTPC building is not for "idiots" that need to have their "hands held." This is not a hobby for the computer illiterate. If you don't know how to copy the shortcuts you need into the appropriate places then you have no business being here. Go buy MCE. That's what it's for.

I'm not attacking the OP but rather the mentality that this program should be idiot proof.

Well maybe it could be one day - this is the wishlist forum after all!! But yes, I'm sure Sub has bigger fish to fry than to accomodate users without basic Windows skills.

And on the off-topic topic, Blackadder the 2nd was by far the best Big Grin

And indeed for many of us this is a hobby, we probably spend as much time fiddling with the setup of gbpvr as actually using it !!!

please note that this is not an attack on gbpvr which quite frankly is an amazing peice of work which for me at least works perfectly out of the box as it were, but the fact is I enjoy tweaking the system, changing skins, trying different plugins etc etc, yet I can be confident at any time it will do what its supposed to do, record the programme I have asked it to.

I having been using the system for probably over a year now and have never missed any scheduled recording because gbpvr failed [I have missed a couple because I forgot to set my cable box to the correct channel [still not bought a redrat serial thingy for my telewest cable box], but thats not gbpvrs fault !!]

But being honest as daphatty says its not a program for the computer illiterate although, if you are using a dvb-t stream as your source which has in built epg with a little more info on setting up your capture card, it probably is fairly idiot proof

Does GB-PVR need to run under a user with admin rights? That's something I've been meaning to try but just haven't had the time.

I agree that it's not designed to be installed and used by the computer illiterate. But at the same time, i don't think it should also be programmed in a way that assumes the user knows everything about video codecs, decoders, etc. cuz I sure as hell don't. LOL I work on computers all day long and I like things to work "out of the box" but allow me to tinker with it also. That's why I have been so reluctant to install 3rd party plugins till now.

I guess I need to google blackadder... cuz I have no idea what you all are talking about. Smile I have heard of Mr. Bean. Wink

Maybe. If so, I havnt purposefully done it. I run with admin rights, and cant be arsed testing without admin rights.

Unfortunately I do need to leave quite a bit up to the user. As non commercial software, I'm not in a position to supply audio and video decoders etc (would need to be licensed$$$), so I am dependent on the user having these already installed on their own machine. This is probably where 80% of people encounter problems. There seems to be thousands of combinations of audio and video decoders, of various versions....

It does... It can't open the TCP/UDP ports for the MediaMVP server otherwise.
I tried already, and the MVP process doesn't work (neither does the Hauppauge software when started in normal user mode, actually)

Users shouldnt have to manually run the Media MVP server. They should have the recording service set to auto start one or more instances.

That's what I meant, sorry. If you configure the GBPVRRecording service to start as a regular user, the auto MVP servers don't work.

The rest of GBPVR (the client) works fine as a user, I'm always in power user group on my PC. Haven't tried as a "standard user" yet, but I'll give it a shot
