That's bad news... I have taken the plunge and today received two Solwise PL-85PE's. I'll let you know how I get on with them. Hopefully I'll have better luck with them than you are having with the Netgear

Hasso

I also have 2 solwise 85mb that i've been playing around with over the last few days and so far i'm very impressed. The MVP works like a charm (i've tried in in 3 diffrent rooms and several sockets). The transfer rate does vary from socket to socket. I've had from 35Mbps to 72Mbps depending on where I plug it in but even at 35Mbs I found it was more than enough to stream DVB broadcasts to the MVP. I've had no issues with interference (despite both ends being in multi plug extension leads) and all this is in a victorian house that probably needed rewiring 50 years ago!

They are such an elegant and flexible solution for networking. I'll definately be getting some more and it saved me the headache of ripping the house apart while pursuading the missus I need Cat 5 going to every room!

A big thumbs up from me. Smile

I still find it slightly disturbing that I have my PC's ethernet wired into the mains though!

I have a pair of Corinex AV200's and they would probably work fine in an average size house with a more normal electrical system. Our house is large (5700 sq ft under roof) and we have two power distribution boxes. I could not get a sufficiently stable connection to use an MVP even though the devices reported over 100 MB/sec throughput.

If someone in the US with a normal size house is intrested in purchasing these send me a PM. They are not cheap -- I paid over $300 for the pair and will sell them for $200.

A progress report on the solwise 85Mbps Homeplug devices, after one evening of setup and play. Must say that they are about as plug and play as you can get. Plug them in, connect the cat5 and off you go. GBPVR server is in the living room and mvp is in the bedroom (different floor). I've connected them directly to a power outlet as opposed to a power bar. Solwise Utility says I am getting 70 to 75 Mbps on some outlets and 30 to 35 on others.

MVP works fine, although I do get intermittent skips/stutters... maybe 5 or so per hour. I'll have to play around with which power outlet I plug them into to see if I get better/worse performance, as performance does vary from outlet to outlet... as dazzyb2k3 noted. I am not experiencing the type of extreme performance issues that yuss is having with his netgear. Overall I am pleased with these devices. A few skips/stutters during playback is a much better alternative to the constant MVP 'trying to connect to server' resets I was getting with the 54Mbps wireless I had been using.

Solwise looks like a good company... I ordered the devices on Wednesday and they arrived Monday... not bad from UK to NZ. And price is about 36 GBP, so they are comparable in price to (and probably cheaper than) a 54Mbps wireless device, at least in NZ. And so far have been a lot less frustrating than wireless in getting setup and consistently working.
Regards,
Hasso

For those of you who are not having issues with video playback, what bitrate are you recording your shows at?

I'm using the default medium profile for recording (3.5Mbps VBR) with my two Solwise devices. I've only twice had a period of stuttering over the last month, which strangely seem to both be when the dishwasher running...

I'm also using the default medium profile (3.5Mbps VBR). I have rebooted the MVP and the GBPVR server and since haven't had any stuttering (cross fingers) when using the MVP. yuss, hope you figure out your issues... could be you just hava a dud device...

Thanks to a severe shortage of sockets around my house, most (if not all) of my equipment is connected into large 5-,6- and 8-way boards. The boards all have surge protection, and some kind of rudimentary RFI filtering - I'm guessing that this kind of networking piggybacks a signal on top of the AC signal, so does anyone who owns one know if they will work surge protected/filtered distribution boards? or do they only work if they go directly into a dedicated wall socket?

Dave

acidfiend2003... I was getting a signal drop when connecting through a board with surge protection. Have a look at http://www.slingcommunity.com/article/11097/ (about half way down the page). That should answer your question. Mine are directly connected to an outlet.
