I changed ratio last night to watch a movie, and when I went back to tv (remebering ratio stuck now), I was surprised how many ratios there were.

Two of them for 4:3 NTSC TV looked almost indistinguishable. After looking in the registry to see which was set, I assumed 0 was supposed to be my default.

I was wondering:

a) Are there really that many? Is 0 the supposed to be my default? (there was one other that looked very similar).
b) Would there be some way manage these better? Like an OSD of what ratio it is on or something? Even just putting an icon on the screen when you get back to 0 would be enough to know you've gone all the way around.

I know you've battled w/ this, and having it stick was part of helping win that. I'm wondering for those that use it casually there may be some better management or reset functionality.

I have simply removed all but two of the ratios - I am watching on a standard screen, so just have that and the 16:9 widescreen one. (0,0,1,1 and 0,0.125,1,0.875). For instance I don't need the one that does the opposite (alters standard ratio TV so it fits better on a widescreen set) etc. They might not be right for everything, but it certainly simplifies matters.

cheers,

That's a good call. I'll just comment out the ones I won't need.

What are the ones just for a widescreen set? Those would be the only ones I don't need. I get stuff in all kinds of ratios (and in ntsc and pal), so having the range of 4:3/standard ones would be good.

Any idea what the one that just slightly different than the 0,0,1,1 is for? It's like the 3-4 one.

Probably to compensate/allow for overscan if using a TV.

I have also edited down to 3 ratios - I also need one to crop black bars on some material.

These are all 7. 0 is default, so I've commented out 3 and 7, because those seem to be the ones for WS sets. I also dropped 4, since that seems to be the overscan version of 0 (which I compensate for w/ the nVidia setting).

I'd still be interested in knowing what each are for, and if I have the ones I think are right, correct. I've included what I think some are below.

<AspectRatio0>0,0,1,1</AspectRatio0> (4:3 normal)
<AspectRatio1>0,-0.125,1,1.125</AspectRatio1>
<AspectRatio2>0,0.125,1,0.875</AspectRatio2> (16:9 on a 4:3)
<AspectRatio3>0.08,0,0.92,1</AspectRatio3> (fix WS on 4:3)
<AspectRatio4>-0.05,-0.01,1.04,1</AspectRatio4> (4:3 overscan)
<AspectRatio5>-0.05,-0.089,1.04,1.089</AspectRatio5>
<AspectRatio6>-0.05,-0.17,1.04,1.17</AspectRatio6>
<AspectRatio7>0.08,0,0.92,1</AspectRatio7> (fix WS on 4:3)

I decieded on three ratios for now (0, 1, 2), and tired to comment out the rest in config.xml. I normally don't have a problem doing this, and have opened, closed both GB and the CP. I still end up w/ all seven. I wrapped each I don't want as so:

<!-- <AspectRatio3>0.08,0,0.92,1</AspectRatio3> -->

Where are these coming from, or what am I doign wrong?

The native bit of C++ code in GB-PVR doesnt have access to a real XML parser so it cheats to get the information it needs. It works well but doesnt understand XML comments. You'd need to delete these lines from the config.xml.

Makes sense. Thx.

Would renaming them have the same effect? I figure it would, since it's not using a wildcard to find them. I don't mind deleting them since the master file has them, too.
