Anyone have experience with the stand-alone (hard drive style) media players that are on the market? Is anything available that uses comskip files? Smile

I’d like to find something with good video quality, that’s portable and simple to operate. My parents would be using this while traveling in their motor home. It would be used with a TV, I don’t need the expense or complexity of a built in display.

I’ve found several different makes & models in my searches. But the Tvisto keeps catching my eye.

Has anyone used the Tvisto, or heard of any problems with it?
Is there another player I should consider?

TIA.

You could consider using comclean (or any of its variants) so you have commercial free files for your parents.
P4 3GHz 1GB, 250GB, nVidia dualTV, GBPVR 1.3.11, XP
Support Comskip, visit the forum and donate at http://www.comskip.org/

I'm in the same boat. I have been wanting to get a portable media player for some time. The one I'm leaning towards is the ARCHOS AV500. Its a DVR/Video Player/MP3/photo bank. I also looked at the Creative Zen Vision(not the Vision M). It's got lots of features but its not a recorder only a audio/video/photo player with additional feature like outlook sync.
Another is the Flashtrax XT. Bigger HD lower price but lacks some features on the others. If its going to be watched a lot you may want a bigger screen. Check out Archos AV700. Its a HD based recorder/player with a 7in screen. If you want smaller check out Archos gmini 400 or Apple IPod Video.

The problem I'm running into is "where to buy". No one in my area stocks these devices on the shelves I'm going to have to order one to check it out. That sucks.

Does anyone have feedback on any of these types of devices? I really want to take my GBPVR recordings with me on Vacations/trips stuff like that.

Another alternitive would be a laptop (or PDA)with wireless. Run a GBPVR box at home then you could then use ORB.COM to watch your recorded programs from any wired or wireless internet connection.

This is what I do now but I need to switch to a HD player so it can be watched on the move.

Thanks Erik,
Yep, I have VRD so that would be a simple postprocessing option. Hopefully the player will digest the edited file without any sync problems.
This was kind of a duel purpose post because I would be buying two of them and using one for an external storage device for my capture system. Direct support for the comskip files would sure save some cpu time.
The MediaMVP is great for controlling GBPVR, but the video quality is a little hard to take at times….

PS
Thanks for taking the time to do the great comskip tuning guide!
For the first time I’ve had some success setting up the program properly! Smile
Thanks again.

A_Brass,
I feel your pain!
Same here, nothing to actually touch and feel within 1000 miles, so I guess it’s going to be the luck of the draw.

Keep in mind, my parents are 80 years old and have a “very” difficult time operating a computer. They call me to ask how to send “me” an email.…

I have an archos mp3 player, honestly it has some issues, and the after sale support was a little lacking.
I guess I keep looking at the video player in my first post because they’re about the only company I’ve come across that actually gives more than the normal “marketing” hype I normally see.

Guess I’ll have to take a chance and just try one.

Actually, I bought the parents a portable and have a margi DVD card (TV Out) that will work with it. But that takes me in a full circle to the computer use problem I talked about earlier. Rolleyes

If you get a player report back on how you like it, I’ll do the same.
I’m guessing more than a few people would like to take their captures on the road.

Jim, I just re-read your post and looked at the device you posted the link about. I didn't see your reference about not needing a display. Have you seen some of the portable HD/media players?

Like :

Lacie Silverscreen

G-PLAY

These types of devices don't seem very expenisve if you compare to external HD or PMP/PVP's. Some even have 5.1 digital audio.

They have prices for these items at BHPhotovideo.com

I'm almost positive that none of these type's of devices support comskip. To bad.

Believe it or not, I use my PSP to watch recorded shows. GBPVR does most of the work. I just wish there was a way to export the Show Analyzer commercial detection settings. I know the PSP supports chapters and other sorts of advanced "skipping" methods. I guess it's just a matter of figuring out how to get that information into the device.

Overall, I like the quality of the PSP's video playback. The PSP is like anything other player, as long as your source is of good quality then your converted file should be too.

I use my Samsung A920 and Moto E815 phone as my portable players. Big Grin
Takes a few minutes to encode a movie to 3gp, then shove it on the transflash card.
You can never have enough tuners!

I love it when a plan comes together, especially when it doesn’t cost me anything (but time).

I decided to see what the set-top DVD player guys had been doing in the last few years, and it looks like a couple of the old DVD players in my closet (Apex 660 & Daewoo 5000N) have been firmware hacked to use external hard drives!
Someone even connected a TCP/IP over IDE adaptor, and has his playing files from the network. Smile
“If” I can wade through the never-ending links (XMLTV flashbacks) and get it working, I’ll use a pair of hard drive cartridges to move the files around.
