Have you tried the MCE2 skin? It's a port of the Mediaportal default skin.

(I think)
Celeron D 2.53GHz, 1024MB
120GB, 160GB int, 80GB, 250GB ext, 40GB lan HDDs
PVR-150 retail, 1 wired MVP, 1 wireless MVP, OFA URC-8910 Remote
Look for me on XBox Live!

Don't forget Media Portal is done using DirectX - can't show on a MPV

I'm happy with some of the new skins we're starting to see. Things a starting to look prettier.

The next release introduces a bit more eye candy in the skinner's arsenal.

The really good designers I know (with the exception of a few) are not very technical, and don't want to touch XML, or anything text-based. With that in mind, I had the idea of designing a WYSIWYG designer that would let the user visually drag and drop elements onto a skin page and resize them, and manage rollover effects, graphics libraries, etc.

I haven't used Media Portal, MCE, or any of the other DVRs that have more attractive skins, so I don't know if they have anything like this, but I think this would be a big drawing point for designers to design skins for GBPVR.

I mentioned this before, but got no feedback on it - maybe nobody really saw it , as it was buried in a post about a different subject. In any case, I'd like to know what people think of this idea.

I think it would be a great idea. I know someone over at the media portal site was "supposedly" working on one but I don't think it ever saw the light of day. Not that MP needs any help in that department anyway (although they could use a TON of help in the stability and functionality departments). Anything that helps improve GBPVR in any way is alright with me.

Good to hear this is being worked on! Must admit to using Mediaportal first but giving up because it was so unstable. Found gbpvr and was really impressed that it worked but felt a bit disappointed at the 'eye candy'.

It is definitely a huge project. I've been writing code for about 5 years (mostly ColdFusion, ASP, Lingo (Macromedia Director), and JavaScript), but have only used .NET for about a year, and have only written four Windows Forms apps, with only one that I'm finishing up for work being a large-scale project. My biggest strengths are T-SQL query writing and optimization, RegEx, and interface design. In other words, I know I'm in over my head Smile But I'm insanely persistent - it's just a matter of how much time it takes me...

Perhaps we could make this a team effort from the start, if there's enough interest. We could open up a thread (or perhaps use something like SourceForge?) to spec this thing out the right way, and delegate work to interested developers. Or, at the very least, I can post my specs and wireframes here for review before I jump into it.
