Given that the OSD on the Sigma XCard is only capable of 256 colours, it would be good to have a skin built with this in mind.

the green skin is OK, but there are pretty bad dithering glitches at the edges.
The other skins look really bad.
cosmetic only, so not major.

I agree that a good 256 color skin is needed. If someone comes up with a really cool low color image for a background, I'll replace the green skin. I really dont like the green skin personally, and only added really for the XCard.

I'm artistically challenged.

Is the colour pallete fixed ( by the application, Xcard or OS ) or can you have 256 of any colours ie shades defined ?? If there is a legal pallette, I need to know what it is

BTW - I actually like the simplicity of the green ;-)

It currently a fixed palette.

In future I may implement a quantized palette based on the first few frames it tries to display. This is actually pretty difficult stuff to implement, but its something we could look at if the current fixed palette proves to be too in flexible.

No its not a just GIF term, although it is sometimes used for this. It is more often associated with JPEG.

Colour quantization is the term used to define process of reducing the number of colours in an image. There are lots of different approaches to this, each with pros and cons. I currently use a fixed palette which was the fastest algorithm and the easiest to get going. Other algorithms such as Octree, produce a picture with much better colour but are very slow. I experimented with this sort of approach in the early releases when the PVR350 was only showing 256 colors.

When I've got more time on my hands I'll revisit this, and see if I cant come up with a much better color rendition on the XCard.
