Anyone ever tried to use an Xbox Media Center as a GB-PVR client?

http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/

I have SageTV running on a PC now & have moved to a new house. In the new place, the PC & big screen TV are not in the same room like they used to be. I've been thinking I was going to buy a MediaMVP & convert to GB-PVR but have read that it's now possible to use the Xbox as a client instead. I'd convert to GB-PVR & have to get the Xbox modded but it's like 3 yrs old anyway & this way would eliminate having to wire a new box in my entertainment center.

Using Sage, the XBOX Media Center (XBMC) would only allow you to access the recorded shows through Windows file shares and play them. I dont even think you could delete them once watched. I had Sage running a couple of months ago and that is all I could get my XBMC to do.
There is no full GBPVR client for the XBOX, or Sage Client for that matter, the MediaMVP is the best bet for your layout. Keep your XBOX un-moded so you can use XBOX Live. [Image: smile.gif]

Thanks jquinlan,
Guess there aren't many people hoping to use an Xbox for a client for their PVR. I posted this question in a variety of places & didn't get much response. I'm actually considering both an MVP & an Xbox client on the same network for the same server but on different TVs. I figured since the Xbox Media Extender is due out for MCE PVRs, this route would appeal to PVRs of other makes.

Maybe Sub will pipe up here at some point too.

Sorry, I dont really time find time to comment on everything and I'm pretty busy at work at the moment.

I dont intend to write an xbox client. I have a "modded" xbox, and a client would be nice, but there is no "legal" way develop one and it would only ever work on modded xboxes. Microsoft only make the SDK available to licensed developers, and even then, the software they produce have to be digitally signed by on the target DVD by microsoft. It's all too difficult really...

But if Microsoft does create a client for MCE, I am sure someone will learn to hack the packets, so with legal Microsoft software on an un-modded XBOX maybe all PVR's can communicate with it. Just imagine getting GBPVR in all its glory at 720p or 1080i HD. [Image: cool.gif]

There is.... using Python!!
As it's included I don't see a real problem trying to implement.

Sorry to wake this thread from the dead, but being able to use XBMC as client (instead of the MediaMVP) would indeed be very cool. However, I fully understand the apprehension sub has with regard to the legality of homebrew software development for the Xbox (or shall I say compilation of it with the Xbox SDK). I wonder if it would be possible to convince the guys working on XBMC to come up with a client implementation themselves which understands the MVP commands. Or perhaps they could team up with sub to define a common protocol...? (wink, wink) [Image: cool.gif]

you wouldnt really need xbmc center to do this, rather just a program on the xbox to do it. i have xbmc, its by far the best media center out there, has the best setup, runs smoothly, those guys really did a great job, and yeah it would be so cool to control gbpvr from an xbox so could watch live tv etc via xbox. a lot of work, but we can all dream. oh and the xbox has a really sexy remote too, well i think its sexy, better than hauppauge and the mce ones ive seen.

you could use lynxbox (i think its called that, i have it on my xbox somewhere), which is just a internet browser for the xbox, its a port of lynx. its not a very good browser thou. the best thing would be to make a program for the xbox to emulate a mvp, well the easiest i guess. so gbpvr and sage etc would see the xbox as a mvp.
