Hi,

Complete newbie question, apologies if this is answered elsewhere but i certainly did try and fail to find it, i found a list but no recommendation at
http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Manual/CaptureCards

I am about to setup a gbpvr machine and am looking for recommendations for
tuner cards, i'm prepared to pay for a stable solution, preferences are
* XP pro support
* PCI based
* AV inputs so i can also archive Sky+
* Would love digital capture also so i wont have to buy another in a few years but this isnt a major deal right now

Had i not asked here i would probably go with the Hauppage PVR-350 or
Twinhan DTV Ter (D+A)

Anyone got some suggestions ??

IMHO i would stick to hauppauge cards. a pvr-150 or a pvr-500 (which is basically _two_ 150 on one board. giving you two tuners but occupies only one pci slot) would be the best option.

if i am not mistaken, all have at least one video input (i think the 150MCE edition has a composite input, the 150 has a composite and s-video input (i may be wrong here!))

i am using two 150s and one 350 and as far as i can tell both deliver the quality.
if you want to use the 350 because of its hardware decoder, be aware that there are some users (including me) who had troubles (freezes, lockups) when using the hardware decoder (== tv out of the card).
also you cannot play anything else than mpeg/mpeg2 through the tv out of the card as it is 'hardwired' to the mpeg-decoder of the card.

and: all the pvr-xxx cards of hauppauge are of course analog cards. thats the only contra (in your case) i can think of.

so again: if you want to use a graphics card tv out or another solution, a pvr-150/pvr-500 would be my first choice.
AMD 1600mHz, 512 M RAM, 20+160 GB drive, Hauppauge PVR-350 + PVR-150 + PVR-150MCE, Win XP Pro SP3, using software decoding.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

If you were really set on a one-pci solution, theres also the Hauppauge HVR 1300 which would give you analog and digital on the same card along with inputs for your sky box.

http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pages/product...r1300.html

Do some research on the forums though, its not supported 'out of the box' by GBPVR but i think i read of someone getting it working fairly simply. Not sure how hybrid cards like this handle recording from one side and watching another though.

Am I correct in assuming that your analog and digital come in through only one cable on this card? I realize that card won't work on my side of the pond, but if that's how it works, it gives me hope that maybe in the not too distant future, hauppauge will come out with an ATSC/NTSC hybrid card.

Is ATSC your version of Over the air digital TV?

Our version is DVB-t in the uk and thats the digi side of the card. and yeah (from what i can tell anyway) its one aerial input for TV, and a seperate aerial input for FM Radio.

If I understand it correctly, yes. NTSC is our analog and ATSC is the digital. There's also QAM, which is digital but for cable rather than ota.

It looks like we're a bit behind the UK with our DTV tech, from what I've read online. There's some good info about US digital in this post.
