Never even heard of this software before. Is this a PVR software?

It was a UK company that were one of the firsts to support dvb-t cards, also one of the first pvr applications out there when I started looking into pvr applications.

I was surprised to see this a few days ago. They've been around for a long time, but have been quite stagnant over the last year of so.

Anybody else curious to find out how much their 'asking price' is? ...It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the announcement.

I'm out of a job in five weeks time - perhaps I'll buy the rights and concentrate my time re-developing it. I could call it BG-PVR. Big Grin

Cheers,
Brian

Apparently a few users are getting together to try and purchase it then to make it open source. http://www.showshiftergroup.com/buyss/

Honestly, I'd doubt they'd be able to make it open source. My guess is that, like me, they have signed many non-disclosure agreements to get technical information about the cards they are using. Also, I should point out, it doesnt actually mentioned the words 'open source' on that page.

birty Wrote:we would be aiming to make the project open source, we would probably not be selling the software nor would there be a dedicated development team. this means that the costs would be very low (i.e. webhosting costs only) there could be the potential for gathering a small development team in the future to develop the software for oem customers. however none of this will be possible without sizeable funding to buy the software to start with

I believe its the same fellow who does XMLTV GUI for us UK users.

I notice birty 2 also has this to say later in the same thread:
Quote:the project wont be open source due to the terms of the purchase agreement, nor will it be free fro the same reason

I've got a copy of the 'Asset Prospectus'. It's 'Private and Strictly Confidential' so I can't breathe a word...

...what a load of bollocks!

Anybody can get a copy - put any name you like in, any company name, any address (I used 'email only'), any telephone number ('email only') then your email address. I'd recommend you fake that - they're selling their mailing list as a separate asset - that's comforting to know!!! Wink Yum - more SPAM.

The buyer of the (non-exclusive) rights to the Showshifter source code doesn't automatically get the HMN or Showshifter domain names, customer database or mailing list - they're sold separately. They also can't 'open source' the code.

I wonder what GB-PVR would be like now if sub had had £1.9 million to invest in it. I also wonder why, when HMN had that amount of money invested in them, they're now scrabbling around for ~£60k

Sigh!
