Text Characters with MVP Remote

How do you type text characters with the MVP remote?

I would like to use the remote with text search, but I cannot type the characters with the MVP remote.

Its currently not possible to do this with the default search screen. One of the plugins might provide you a solution, but I'm not sure.

The wiki text search manual page is quite sparse on the subject.
