I used to have the sleep mode working but one of the Windows Xp patches stoped it from working, Now when I hit sleep the system stays on and all the fans and power supply stay on, Anyone know? or maby software I can get that will sleep my system again?? Thanks

That's S1 suspend....S3 is a more total sleep mode.

It's usually set in the bios, not Windows.

For some reason since about the last 3 weeks or so, my system sleeps or at least the screen goes blank and the system light flashes instead of staying lit, but, like you, the fan doesn't go off. Only once since then has it but only for a short while. I didn't think it was anything I've done such as a BIOS update but I add and remove so many programs from the beta testing I do that it's hard to be sure on this system. I can't say it was the Windows update but I do that manually and have done so more often lately. If it can be pinned down to which update it was, I'd love to know.
How sure are you it was the update that did this to you?

It just seemed like after a fue updates ago it won't sleep, and I read somewhere that it was a windows update that turns it off, I recently did a fresh Xp pro install and tested the sleep mode before any updates and it worked fine, I guess I shoulda kept on testing it till I found it :o , I don't want to just uninstall updates to find it and Microsoft Tech support is just out of the question Big Grin ,I'd probobly never get a reply.......

Did you install a new USB thingy recently?'

I found this thread:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1019158863

And especially the post from Monday, April 21, 2003 at 11:24 pm seems to have solved things for people.

That said, my fans also spin when I set it to standby. I use hibernate instead. Maybe that would be a solution for you too?

Now, why would he want to do that? That would hardly make the fans stop, would it? Big Grin

Hibernate looks interesting, I've never used it before this, all the fans shut off and the system sleeps (hibernates) now as long as everything can wake the machine from this state that would be great....

thanks

S3 suspend turns off the fans, too. Hibernate takes longer to wake from, but is better, because if you lose power the system doesn't shut down (suspend requires voltage, even if it is just a tiny amount).
