Change how filenames are displayed

I have a lot of mpeg files I want to watch through the MVP. The filenames are not in a standard format, they contain meta data like dates...
Is there a way to change how the filenames are displayed in the user interface besides renaming the actual mpeg files? Some sort of string manipulation on the fly?

Any help appreciated.

My Videos plug in lets you do this, as does possible the Video Archive plug-in?

I use renamerecording to change to episode name after a schedule recording and view video with the Video Archiver plugin.

Yep, press the i button on the remote to bring up the menu, then edit, then rename.

Ok, I understand what you mean. I wasn´t quite clear on what I wanted to do, sorry.
I wanted to change the display of the name not the actual filename.
