Here is an article on UPnP/AV that I find quite informative.

The part I find most interesting is on RemoteUI. Looking at it, it looks like XRT2.1 would be rather easy for our DMA manufacturers to add to the firmware of our DMA's thus allowing us to have GUI's on our devices!

So we just need everone who owns one to email their vendor asking for RemoteUIand suggesting XRT 2.1 support.

So then we'd have a replacement for out MediaMVP's that would support more formats natively.

Why not ask for VNC instead of something owned by one company?

VNC uses way more processor power and more storage. That is why a MediaCenter Extender costs at least $100 more than a renderer. XRT2.1 is just a binary protocol that transmits keystrokes from the remote, so it uses way less resources. Also XRT2.1 is under the UPnP/AV Standard which is out for all to use. even the UPnP Microstack that most renderers use is from Intel.

Is this the current media center extender protocol version 1 you are talking about?
Rumour is this version is already declared dead.
Microsoft seems to come with version 2 in Vista, not compatible with version 1.
BUt I am certainly not an expert you seem to be :o

I Believe Ver.2 adds more of the UPnP support. hopefully NMPR 2.1 compliance.
