I transcode files when I'm running low on disk space. Basically I run DirMon on the recordings directory and use mencoder to cut and transcode the file to XviD and then rename the show.mpg to show.mpgold. Short of manually updating the database, would it be possible for GB-PVR to look for show.avi if show.mpg cannot be found?

I've tried using the built-in transcoding but ran into problems discussed in other threads.

Thanks

Great idea!

Alternatively (If Sub could provide the SQL), I sure that someone could knock up a renameshow.exe that could take old file name (%1) and new file name (%2) as parameters and modify the database. In fact, RenameRecording (written by KingArgyle) could probably be modded to do this.

I to started playing around with dirmon recently due to problems transcoding to xvid. I would appreciate (via PM to keep thread clean) your dirmon and xvid settings if you have the time.

I'm attaching the original source code for RenameRecordings. This should get you started in being able to do what you want.

I've added some logic like this in the next release.

Great to hear Sub!

gEd, I'll post all the dirmon/transcoding info in the forums in an appropriate thread once I get all the testing done.

Thanks guys

I don't know zip about c# unfortunately so I might struggle to mod RenameRecordings here...

stattik: How about renaming the avi back to mpg. I suspect that this would work ok.

Works for the PC, but not if you plan to play that show on the MVP

I tried that but got an error when trying to play the files. It probably depends on the decoder used.

Would this renaming thingy help me in the following scenario:

My pvrpc has a 40gb disk only.
I record a show, the minute the show is done recording it gets comcut and transcoded into divx/xvid/whatever.
The original file is deleted and the new file is moved to a network drive (nslu2 box) with lots and lots of space.

Would it now still be possible to find the recording in the list of recordings?

the RenameRecordings literally renames the file using the program description stored in the database. The point is that, with a good understanding of programming, the gbpvr libraries and database, it should be reasonably easy to do this kind of thing. i.e. renaming and / or relocating files and updating their details in the gbpvr database.

With respect to the original request, I think I will told out for the next release, it's much safer and easier.
