In the last update rollup of Windows MCE, Microsoft added the possibility of using so called "Intelligent Zoom". This mode is used for scaling up 4:3 images into full 16:9 widescreen, but it stretches the image non-linearily (i.e. the middle of the screen is hardly stretched at all while the left/right sides of the screen are stretched more). It also crops a little bit on the top/bottom.

Previously, I used the s-video input on my tv which made it possible for me to use the non-linear zoom on the tv (SuperWide). But with this addition it would be possible to use the VGA input instead - and that means a BIG difference in quality! Actually, the non-linear zoom in MCE is far superior to the one on my Philips TV...

I have absolutely no idea how MS implemented this, but if it is possible to add to GB-PVR too that would be fantastic!

ffdshow might be able to help you out here, theres probably a plugin for ffdshow to do this.

btw panasonic calls this "Just" mode, hard thing to search for. if you find it let us all know.

I'll look into that when I get home..! There seems to be something called "warped resize" in ffdshow - sounds promising.
