Planning to get Slingbox, it's a device that placeshifts video. It supports TIVO now. Am wondering if GBPVR can support this as well.

I think it's in early stages, I haven't read a bad review but I've seen the forum and it seems that there are a lot of happy users as well. From what I've read, the quality is good as long as your internet can handle it, low bandwidth = crappy video, good bandwidth = better video. I think the video is small and not full screen but am not sure, am waiting for the site to set up a demo stream. I really think the tech has potential as long as the broadcasters don't yell foul.

Anyway, thought it might be a good addition to wander all over and have access to my GBPVR, why should the TIVO guys get all the fun.

I am using one of these, and the above is correct, over my LAN the quality is good (with full screen if you want). However I have yet to try mine remotely so my only concern will be the upstream speed of my home connection.

I use an MVP, I have yet to try them together but my concern will be over the relaying of the remote. The MVP can be a bit slow at times and therefore adding a remote signal across the globe via the slingbox may not help, especially as some actions on MVP can take a few clicks.

Whilst I am a fan of slingbox I would have thought there were better ways of getting access to your Home Media. (Orb is one example)

I think the slingbox was primarily developed to enable watching and controlling LiveTV across the globe however with the likes of Tivo and Sky+ we all see greater flexibility.

I have been using ORB for a few month's. It works well if you have the bandwidth. I generally get about 500-600k upstream, which seems to be pretty good. I can't comment on the Slingbox but it appears to be a good idea. However, since I have all my media Accessable though my home network, ORB looks like a better idea to me.

Becuase my tuner is in a below spec box, I have not tried using orb to stream live TV. But, recorded programs work very well. I was actually able to get GBPVR to play an ORB music stream yesterday. I could not get it to play a video stream however.

I wish someone could intregate GBPVR playback of ORB stream's. That way I could get the full GBPVR experience on my Laptop.

A_Brass... Kudos to you for letting us know about ORB. Finally I am able to view videos remotely, my pics, and my music... and it's all free!

No prob but I cant take the credit, I'm pretty sure I learned about it from a post in this Forum. I only wish there a way to intregate Orb in to GBPvr and GBPVR into Orb. (Sounds dumb, but follow me on this one)

Orb into GBPVR:
If an orb plugin existed that could read GBPVR database info we could have our complete Show descriptions before watching a file. Wouldn't that be nice.

GBPvr into Orb
If GBPvr could read and buffer ASX video playlists, it could playback Orb steams just as any video file. I was able to get it to work with Audio already.

When you logged into Orb, you can play the asx streams without using the website (if you have saved the playlist file earilier). Doesn't work all the time sometimes you have to restart Orb to get it going.

Its not a perfect solution, if you open the playlist file in an editor, you will it contains your pc's ip address as part of the file name for each entry in the the playlist.. So if you have dynamic IP's it wont work very long. But who know's maybe down the road somene wil want try to create the needed plugin's to get this working. On orb's site they API is available to create plugin's but I'm sure it has limits. I dont think it was intended be used without accessing the website.

Thanks for introducing ORB, been playing with it. Now, don't have any use for slingbox. I just attached my recording folder to be seen by ORB and now I see everything remotely. Not as high a resolution if it was local, but I get by. I also get to share my home videos with friends.

This is great. Thanks again, A_Brass

Yeah, I also find the video playback is not as good as my PVR but its good enogh for my needs. From what I hear Slingbox isn't much better. It all depends on your thoughput, mostly upload speed. Im glad others found the info useful.

Just like to thank me also for mentioning this [Image: icon7.gif]. Only kidding I would also like to thank http://www.pocketpcmag.com (PocketPC Mag) for introducing me. Works great on PPC too!

I think the big difference is that Orb streams your media files, whilst Slingbox allows for global streaming of live (pseudo live) TV. So with the likes of Sky+/tivo you can set your system remotely and playback and control. For Example, an expatriate could have one of these in their home country with a PVR and have live/delayed/recorded access & control to sports/soaps/news etc. Obviously a family/friendly host would be required, but once set up little maintenance would be required. On a reciprocal basis I could host a unit for a friend in the US to watch UK soccer and I could catch up a series on West Wing!

I certainly think it has its place as does Orb. We will see this area grow and once bandwidth up & down improves I think it will be a very useful tool.

Cheers

Alan
