Just got this new FX5500 for my wife's PVR.
Latest drivers, newest gbpvr, using Nvidia decoder, VMR9, Dual-mode display with TV as the secondary via S-Video out.
Live TV and watching any recording, there are vertical black bars taking up about 10% of the screen on either side, but ONLY on the TV.
I have tried every option in the Nvidia control panel area.

I googled this, and perused the Nvidia forums, and it seems that this is an ongoing problem that nobody has successfully resolved.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

You may want to try the 78.01 driver. I had issues with 81.95.

I'm using this setup myself. I went to the advanced tab in the display properties, then the GeForce FX5500 tab, then highlight the TV icon and select Device Settings. Then device adjustments. You can make the image on the tv larger or smaller and shift it up/down or left/right. It worked for me. Not perfect mind you, but very exceptable.

I know I can move it all over the screen, which doesn't help at all in removing the black borders.
If I move it left, the border on the right just increases in size.
If I enlarge the picture, the top and bottom get cut off.

out of curriosity, if you go to start-->run and type dxdiag, does it show directdraw under display as available?

I have the evga fx5500, and it almost seems like it's not available. I just wanted to see if it was true, or it was something in my setup.

DD is working/enabled.
I'd prefer to keep the quality setting, and not purchase another card, or hack it. If it were my own system I would, but this is my wife's Big Grin

Huh...maybe it's just not added for the evga model. Or I have something blocking it. The test for it works fine. Since I'm using it for PVR only, I'm not overly concerned.

Thx for checking it.

I don't believe the card supports stretching the image, which is what you're wanting to do. You can move it, but you can't stretch it. My GForce 2 Ti had the same trouble, about 2 inches on each side of a 32 inch screen was wasted. The ATI Radeon cards give much more control of the TV image than the earlier NVidia cards - you can stretch it right off the screen. I'm using an ATI 9200 now.

I'm personally hoping the NVidia 6200 series is better than the earlier NVidia cards, because I've got one on the way. Smile

You can stretch it, and I have to do the same thing. But, you cannot stretch it in just one direction.

What you're decribing sounds like something different. If you put the destop there, does the same thing happen? Or to the GB pages (not video)? If it's just the video, then try hitting F7 to cycle through screen ratios. It could be a goofiness of using it as a 2nd display.

When I do this, and this is in VMR9 mode mind you (overlay will fill the screen naturally), The width goes off the screen first. That leaves me w/ letterbox lines on top/bottom. But, to get past the "white dots" phenomonon you get sometimes, I nugde the screen up so the black bar is only at the bottom (but you can't notice it, unless you pay attention...it just looks like the bottom of the tv tube).

It sounds like a fudge, but I think the overall effect is great, because I get more ratio control for TV (getting things that are normally cutoff in the overscan), DVD, and media I get elsewhere (divx, et al), and I get to compensate for the white dots issue. It also means I have the same ratio for the GB screens as I get when I watch media.

I did a bunch of messing with the Nvidia decoder/TV settings, and got it working fullscreen (using VMR9). I have no idea which setting actually did the change, but it does work.
Cycling F7 had no effect, and even the desktop was letterboxed, so obviously the video was too.
There was something in the settings for secondary output I think (resolution maybe?).
