The new Wireless Media MVP is coming to stores soon.
http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/16/haupp...over-wifi/

Newb question:
Wondering what are my options for hooking this up to my existing wired Li
nksys router? Do I need to add a wireless router? Or is there a PCI card solution?

Any suggestions ?

Thx

Just add an access point to your wired network.

funny thing is, a new wireless router is usually cheaper that a wireless bridge. I've heard of manu people buying a router and simply using it as a bridge. If you turn DHCP off on a wireless router, you chould just have a wireless bridge.
WIN 7
1 X PVR 250
1 X PVR 500
1 X HD-PVR
2 X MVP

If you get 2 Linksys WRT54G Routers, you can configure 1 to act as a bridge but you need to change the firmware to a 3rd Party firmware, I used HyperWRT. I just followed the WIKI, performance is the same as my wired MVP (Wireless Solution #3) http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Manual/MVP
Win XP Pro SP 2
ASUS P5k-PRO Dual Core 3.0 GHZ with 4GB RAM
1 Seagate 150 GB SATA HD
1 Seagate 1TB SATA HD
1 Seagate 750 GB SATA HD
1 Hauppauge PVR500MCE
2 MVP (2 Wired / 1 Wireless via 2 Linksys WRT54G routers)
1 dead MVP (searching for replacement)

Yes this is true but it's worth pointing out that to use a router as an access point only, DO NOT connect to the WAN port but just use the LAN ports instead.

You can use the WAN port if you really want to but you then end up with two subnets between which you have to route and probably also set forwarding rules too when there's really no point.

You don't need to change firmware, just use the LAN ports only! Wireless to wired is just layer 2 media conversion. The WRT54G out of the box does that, you just don't need the router part to the WAN.

I've never been successful at this. I tried with D-link products and just couldn't get it to work. I'm reluctant to buy Linksys because EVERY Linksys router I've ever used died within 2 months of the purchase (I've had 4 of them). Besides, 54Mbps is too slow IMO for transmitting video to an MVP. I have enough connection problems (read: occasional hiccups) using CAT5 at 100Mbps. I don't want lack of bandwidth to further compound the issue.

It could be. The problem is that the signalling rate is 54Mbps, radios are half duplex, then add on protocol overhead and the fact that the signalling rate is only going to be 54Mbps when near enough to the AP and without interference. Some people might just find that by the time they have plopped their MVP a couple of walls away that the rate has fallen back to just a few Mbps, add in a bit of interference from the neighbours AP, cordless phone, microwave etc and it's not the most ideal environment. A slow web page loading is one thing but yes, you want the video to just work.

Wireless is for mobility and rapid deployment, streaming to a fixed device is really a job for a bit of cable.

Thanks for the replies. I plan on keeping the wired router and will probably add a 2nd wireless router as an access point. Any other inexpensive options?

Also, anyone else want to key in on the wired versus wireless debate? Should I get the wired or wireless Media MVP?

The wireless version has not been confirmed to work with GB-PVR, so there is always the possibility it might not work. That said, I'm hopefully it will.
