Hey All!

Still getting the hang of things. I think I've come a long way but am still confused by something:

I have a clip that is encoded in Mpeg2 format (orginally a VCD). It plays in WMP but not in GBPVR, it basically hangs the box for about a minute then starts responding again. No screen change or flicker at all.

I have a clip recorded by GBPVR and Gspot tells me its Mpeg2 as well. It will play in both WMP and GB.

Gspot in both cases says there is no codec installed for Mpeg2.

When I ask Gspot to tell me what codec is actually being used to render the stream it says InterVideo Video Decoder to render the GBPVR recording. And fails to render the other clip at all.

But as I said...WMP plays both with no issue.

Can someone provide any info on why? I've tried to read through some of the other Mpeg2 topics but none seem to relate to this. More about flickering image etc...

you can try using "graphedit" to view the modules being selected by the os to view your vcd>mpeg2 file.

in the GBPVR config, try explicitly set the decoders to use (InterVideo for instance) rather using the "system default" setting.

already tried the other codecs listed in GBPVR to no avail.

I will check out graphedit.

I'm wondering if I should install an Mpeg2 codec?

Volksman, what mpeg 2 playback codec have you configured to work with GBPVR?
If you want to know why nPVR is the bomb, ask my wife!

well I think that is where I get confused. I haven't setup any particular codec for GB. I use System Default in all playback settings as using the others listed in config didn't seem to make any difference.

But I thought this entire system was very dependant on Mpeg2. Like I said Gspot says I have no Mpeg2 codec installed and looking with Sherlock I can't see any listed. so how does this work at all? Smile

so here is a tid bit more info:

graphedit says that it can't render the VCD file at all either. Weird.

the GB recorded Mpeg2 file goes like this:

File -> Mpeg2 Demuxer ->Mpeg1 -> InterVideo Audio and InterVideo Video filters

Not really sure what this tells me though. I guess it means the file is being converted on the fly to mpeg1?

VCD is MPEG1. Shows recorded by GB-PVR are MPEG2. It'll be something funny about the directshow configuration on your machine for playing MPEG1 files.

No, this is not converting it to mpeg1. Whatever is connected to the demuxer will be the decoder. I cant think what product has a decoder called "mpeg1" though. Something youve installed on your machine has added this directshow filter.

Well I may have relayed that incorrectly (I've never used graphedit before today) but basically the second box says:

-> Mpeg-2 stream Mpeg2 Demultiplexor Mpeg1 -> audio codec
Video -> video codec

So yeah I guess its not converting (I miss read where the arrows are pointing).

But this is the read out on the GB recorded Mpeg. I can't get any details on the VCD Mpeg (which Gspot is the one telling me it would use the mpeg2 decoder if there was one installed).

The ONLY program that seems to be able to render the VCD stream is WMP. Gspot and graphedit both error when trying to render it.

So how does one modify the directshow filter settings (or find out if that is the cause)?

Here is what sherlock is telling me is installed (attached). The only thing in there that I know I installed was the vossub codec but that was after this problem surfaced. But I am willing (and will) disable that one. Thanks for any help provided!
