Perfect! I got a successful mpg this morning. I appreciate your patience with me. The change of those two lines from PAL settings to NTSC was the issue. (Of course changing the framerate has solved the stuttering I was seeing on the video as well as the location on the screen be redefining the vertical scan number.)

Thanks Ton for sharing potentially a great tool. Been looking for a way to get MVP to correctly display AR of DVDs.

I'm made the adjustments for NTSC that you provided in an earlier post. However, in about 1/2 of my recoded DVD files, i'm still seeing it show in full screen on the mvp. I've noticed when the tool is calculating the AR of the video before it encodes it, it always comes up with 1.5 (720/480), irrespective of whether its 1.85:1 or 2.4:1, or whatever. I'm wondering if this might have something to do with it? Total noob here, so i could be way off base.

Any thoughts that you, or anyone else has, would be greatly appreciated!

thanks again

Hey Rick,

I have a few things you might check:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of the tool (in the older version I had some problem handling the decimal sign in non-dutch versions of Windows
2. When you say "calculating the AR" do you mean the original DVD or what MVPRecoder makes of it?? In the first case, you can try running the MVPRecoder command-line for MPlayer (it shows up on the screen when you run it) by hand and posting the results? The fact is that I am not calculating the AR, but rather having MPlayer analyse the video and then reading out what it reports... If MPlayer is getting it wrong, there's not much I can do!!
3. Another option is that MPlayer is calulating the AR of the "credits" or "intro" screen of your DVD. In that case, adding a chapter-number to start playing the video from, might help...

Like I said, running the Mplayer command-line by hand and posting the results back here, probably gives us the best option of seeing what the issue is...

thanks, Ton.

I've attached a screenshot of what mvprecode looks like when running. I'm not sure if it's the mvprecode picking up that Aspect Ratio or mplayer is detecting it. Maybe it could have something to do with DVDDecrypter or DVDshrink which i also use before i run mvprecode? I dunno - just really strange that it works on some DVD's but not others.

When u say run mplayer by hand, i'm not sure how to go about doing this... do i just run the same command line that is generated for mencoder (that shows up in the screenshot attached), but substitute mplayer for mencoder in the command line???

Thanks again for you help!!!...

Hi Rick,

I can see from your screenshot that it's mplayer that detects the AR and size...

As fas as I can see, mplayer finds the DVD to be: 480x720 (which means an 1.5 AR). You could check this by using this command:

Code:
mplayer -v -identify -frames 0 <path to DVD-file>
or:
Code:
mplayer -v -identify -frames 0 -dvd-device <path to DVD>

I do suspect it has something to do with your pre-processing... You could try running MVPRecoder on the original DVD to be sure....

Thanks, Ton. Much appreciated. I'll play around with it to see if it is in fact a preprocessing step, and more specifically to determine which one might be causing the issue. MVPrecode is the perfect tool to get movies to play properly on the MVP and i'm anxious to work the kinks out of my process. Thanks again for sharing it, Ton!

For folks that are having success, i'm curious what DVD ripping software you are using (i'm using DVDDecrypter) and if you are reauthoring down to just the main movie, what software are you using to do this? (I'm using DVDShrink).

TIA!

Afaik you can do this directly with dvddecrypter. Look in the settings under file mode (I think...).

Is 0.5 still the latest version? I don't see anything on the wiki yet.

Thanks,
Greg
